Unique sewing thread that dissolves when exposed to heat

A young start-up in Belgium has just launched technology that is shaking up the textile industry: self-dissolving thread and a system that 'transforms' clothes using heat.

While the textile industry is being called an environmental "sinner", a startup company in Brussels, Belgium, has just revealed two breakthrough technological initiatives that promise to turn clothing waste into a valuable resource.

The textile industry is currently one of the most polluting industries: accounting for about 10% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, consuming a large amount of land resources (nearly 400m²/person in Europe), raw materials (about 400kg/person) and water (9m³/person). In addition, the production process also leaves behind chemicals and microplastics, causing serious soil and water pollution.

Realizing that only about 1% of clothing is recycled due to a lack of effective solutions to separate materials, startup Resortecs has created 16 types of sewing threads that can dissolve when exposed to heat. This allows textile products to be easily disassembled and recycled at the end of their life.

At the same time, Resortecs also invented the world's first thermal disassembly and sorting system. This system helps the recycling process take place quickly, recovers twice as much fabric and ensures that the raw materials are over 90% pure.

The goal of these two innovations is to optimize recycling right from the product design stage, turning textile waste into raw materials to create new products, moving towards a circular economic model.

This technological leap, encouraged at European level, is expected to promote more sustainable textile and garment industry, reduce environmental impact and bring practical benefits.
