Film crew attacked by shark, boat explodes at sea

In an interview with RadioTimes.com on June 14, Our Planet II producer and director Toby Nowlan recounted the terrifying experience of a six-day trip across the Pacific Ocean north of Hawaii (USA) to collect material about the Laysan albatross' first flight.

According to Nowlan, one day, the film crew boarded a boat hoping to capture the first footage of an albatross flying over the ocean, only to encounter its natural predator, tiger sharks, waiting to devour the unfortunate chicks. However, the crew did not expect that they would be the target of the ocean’s most dangerous predator.

“The V-shaped ring of water was coming towards us and the tiger shark came at the boat and chewed big holes in it. The whole boat exploded. We tried to shoo it away but it didn’t go away. It was horrible. It was the second shark to attack us that day,” Mr Nowlan recalled.

Luckily for the documentary crew, they were only about 100 meters from land so they were able to get to shore safely.

Director Nowlan added that the team then continued working in a small rubber boat. However, the boat was also attacked and its engine was damaged. This time, it was not sharks, but large trevally, weighing up to nearly 60 kg.

He described the shark’s behavior as “extremely unusual.” He suggested that the 15-foot-long “sea killer” might be starving due to a lack of natural food. “They’re just trying to sample whatever they can find in the water,” he speculated.

The show's other producer, Huw Cordey, also told The Sun about his shark attack story.

“The original idea was to do underwater footage of tiger sharks waiting in the shallows at Laysan to catch seagulls. The first day the tiger sharks appeared, the crew went on an inflatable boat and two sharks attacked them. In the end, they didn’t get any underwater footage,” he said.
