Northern Electricity proactively responds and actively restores the power grid after storm No. 5

Before storm No. 5 made landfall, in order to proactively respond and minimize damage, the Northern Power Corporation requested 100% of its member units to immediately deploy disaster prevention and control plans, ensuring absolute safety for people, equipment and the power system.

This morning (August 26), storm No. 5 (Kajiki) weakened into a tropical depression in Laos after raging for more than 10 hours in the central region of Vietnam, focusing on the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh . When it reached the shore, the storm had the strongest wind speed of level 12 and had weakened to level 8 when it reached the Vietnam - Laos border.

EVNNPC said that, right before storm No. 5 made landfall, in order to proactively respond and minimize damage, EVNNPC issued Urgent Dispatch No. 4196/CD-EVNNPC (dated August 22, 2025), requesting 100% of member units to immediately deploy disaster prevention and control plans, ensuring absolute safety for people, equipment and the power system. Next, Dispatch No. 4219/CD-EVNNPC (dated August 24, 2025), continued to direct units to urgently implement the direction of the Government , Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and the Corporation; focus on reinforcing vulnerable points; arrange 24/7 operation; coordinate with local authorities to clear the route corridor, strengthen propaganda on electrical safety and promptly report on damage developments and recovery progress.

Ninh Binh Power Company's shock team prepares to go to support Nghe An province

EVNNPC requires all member units to implement the "4 on-site" motto: on-site command, on-site forces, on-site means and on-site logistics, to handle incidents quickly and effectively when they occur.

As of the morning of August 26, due to the impact of storm No. 5 (Kajiki), many areas in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces still had to stop or reduce power supply. However, the Electricity units have made efforts to restore and supply power to 509,000 customers and 2,685 transformer stations have resumed operation.

In Thanh Hoa, there are currently about 395,000 customers affected; 3,196 transformer stations and 80 medium voltage lines are experiencing problems. Thanh Hoa Electricity Company has restored many transformer stations, but some areas are still facing difficulties due to heavy rain, flooding, and traffic disruption. Notably, efforts are being made to restore power to serve agricultural production and people's lives at the 3 affected pumping stations.

In Nghe An, there are currently about 870,000 customers affected; 6,187 transformer stations and 148 medium voltage lines are experiencing problems. Counting and handling work is still being urgently deployed with the support of many shock teams from the Northern Power Sector.

In Ha Tinh, about 349,000 customers were affected; 2,466 transformer stations and 62 medium voltage lines were damaged. The damage was more severe when some power poles were broken and wires were damaged. However, many important transformer stations have been restored to ensure power supply for essential loads, including hospitals and key infrastructure.

Currently, the weather in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh is still experiencing widespread heavy rain, units are still trying to count the damage and organize troubleshooting at the scene. EVNNPC has mobilized many shock teams from affiliated Power Companies and contractors to move in to support. In total, EVNNPC has mobilized 10 shock teams with more than 326 officers and employees from Power Companies in the Northern region, and at the same time received support from the Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) with 210 officers and employees from Power Companies in Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Quang Tri, bringing the total support force to more than 536 people, of which Ha Tinh has 316 people and Nghe An has 220 people.

On the night of August 25, delegations from Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho... set out with specialized equipment and materials, ready to work in harsh conditions. EVNNPC is committed to mobilizing maximum human resources and means, ensuring absolute safety for workers. Quang Ninh Electricity supports to fix the power grid system in Ha Tinh province

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in the next 6 hours, there is a high risk of flash floods, landslides, and land subsidence in the provinces of Son La, Phu Tho, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Quang Tri. The Northern Power Sector continues to be on duty 24/7, implementing the "4 on-site" motto, determined to handle and overcome power problems after the storm, and soon restore power to customers. EVNNPC will continue to update information on the damage situation and response work in the following bulletins, and look forward to receiving the sharing and sympathy of customers in the areas affected by power supply interruptions.

EVNNPC recommends electrical safety during storms

Before the storm hits, people need to check and reinforce the electrical system in their homes and workplaces. Turn off unnecessary electrical equipment, avoid placing electrical outlets and equipment in places at risk of rain and flooding.

When a storm comes, if you are forced to go out due to work or objective conditions, you should absolutely avoid standing near electric poles, power stations or coming into contact with electrical equipment when it is raining heavily or windy. In the house, if the floor is flooded or wet, you need to turn off the power (cut the circuit breaker). Circuit breakers, fuses, circuit breakers and sockets should be placed higher than 1.40m, dry, to avoid children from contacting or causing electrical short circuits when flooded.

In flooded areas, only turn the power back on after checking all electrical equipment in the house to detect and eliminate damage and unsafe phenomena.

When you discover someone has been electrocuted, quickly turn off the power and call for help. If you cannot turn off the power immediately, use a dry wooden stick or bamboo pole to push the wire away or pull the victim with dry clothes. Absolutely do not touch the victim directly.

In case of detecting electrical problems in the house or on the street, people should not attempt to repair them themselves without the knowledge and appropriate tools to avoid causing electrical accidents.
