10th grade benchmark scores in Ho Chi Minh City will increase

With a high score range and not a large gap between scores, the 10th grade benchmark score in Ho Chi Minh City this year is predicted to increase in top schools.

On June 23, the Departmentof Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City officially announced the 10th grade exam scores of more than 76,000 candidates in Ho Chi Minh City. The score distribution for all three subjects this year is considered to be good, with clear differentiation.

Unexpected math score distribution

The most surprising thing about the score distribution of the three subjects in the 10th grade exam this year is math. According to the announcement of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the math score distribution chart shows a significant improvement compared to previous years, with scores mainly at the good level.

Specifically, the peak score range for math this year is around 6.5 to 7.5 points. Specifically, the score of 7 has the most candidates with 4,580 students. Following are 4,345 candidates with 6.75 points and 4,221 candidates with 6.5 points. The 8 point level has 2,886 candidates and 8.25 points has 1,609 candidates. The 9 point level has 336 candidates. Meanwhile, there are still many candidates with below average scores (below 5 points). Specifically, at the level below 1 point, there are still 409 candidates. The 3.5 point level has 2,745 candidates, the 4 point level has 4,852 candidates. Meanwhile, the very high score (over 9 points) has a very small number of candidates, only 143 candidates achieved 9.25, 93 candidates achieved 9.5, 68 candidates achieved 9.75 and 36 candidates achieved 10 points.

Math shows a relatively clear differentiation. Most candidates are concentrated at the average level, but the number of candidates with high scores decreases rapidly, especially at near-perfect scores.

Commenting on the math score distribution, Mr. Tran Van Toan, former Head of the Math Group at Marie Curie High School (District 3), said that it can be said that the math score distribution of this year's 10th grade exam is very good. According to Mr. Toan, the math score distribution is concentrated at the level of 6-7 points, which is the dream of all exams, not just math. "This year's exam is good, not confusing candidates. On the other hand, the Department of Education and Training previously announced the sample exam, so it helps students review with focus. The exam is also closely following the sample exam, so it does not make students confused" - Mr. Toan added.

According to Mr. Toan, the math exam reflects the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program, so there is no element of luck here, whoever can do it can do it and vice versa is shown in the score distribution. The exam has the last geometry question which is difficult, requiring students who are good, have good arguments, and present clearly to get the absolute score, otherwise they will get 9.25 out of 9.5.

Mr. Lam Vu Cong Chinh, a math teacher at Nguyen Du High School (District 10), also said that the math score distribution this year is very stable. According to Mr. Chinh, the score distribution this year is concentrated at the level of 6.5 to 7.5 points, while last year the highest score was from 5.5 to 6 points. "The score distribution of 10th grade math this year is even, the score distribution is skewed to the right (high level) a lot. The remaining levels are not too far apart" - Mr. Chinh analyzed.

Great competitiveness

Apart from math, the score distribution for both literature and foreign languages this year is skewed to the right, showing that the majority of candidates achieved average to good scores. This score distribution is considered positive and very well differentiated.

In literature, the score distribution is skewed to the right (leaning toward higher scores). The peak of the score distribution is concentrated in the range of 6.75 to 7.25 points. 5,093 candidates scored 7 points, 4,759 candidates scored 7.5 points. 3,857 candidates scored 8 points, 1,480 candidates scored 8.5 points, and only 2 candidates scored 9.5 points. The score distribution shows that literature is well differentiated, with the majority of candidates achieving average scores. Very few candidates scored too low or too high.

For foreign languages, the score spectrum is also skewed to the right, similar to literature, but the peak is wider and more spread out. The peak of the score spectrum is concentrated at around 7 to 8 points. 2,696 candidates scored 8.5 points, 2,101 candidates scored 9 points. The absolute highest score was 488 candidates who scored 10 points.

With the above 3-subject score distribution, teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh said that this year's 10th grade benchmark score will definitely increase, especially in top schools. According to teacher Chinh, the exam is well differentiated, the score distribution is good, so it is not too difficult to say it is difficult and not too easy to say it is easy. As for top schools, the benchmark score is expected to increase from 1.5 to 2 points.

"Looking at the score range, we can see that the highest score achieved in all three subjects is 6.5 to 7.5 points, which are those who applied to top schools. Thus, if admitted to top schools, for math alone, candidates must score 8.25 or higher to be admitted. In the math test, there are 2 differentiating questions, questions 6b and 7c, which are both difficult questions worth 1.5 points. To be able to do these 2 questions, students must be really good. The majority of students can do the remaining questions," Mr. Chinh explained.

The principal of a high school in District 1 said that based on the score distribution and enrollment targets of this year's schools, it can be said that the 10th grade benchmark will increase at top schools, at least by 1 point or more, leading to fluctuations in the benchmark scores at middle schools. "The reason is that most of the top schools this year did not increase their enrollment targets, the competition is high. Many students fall to the second choice, causing middle schools to also increase their benchmark scores by at least 0.25 points or more," he analyzed.

Teacher Tran Van Toan commented that the benchmark scores will not have many changes compared to the previous school year, and will not increase by a large margin, but are expected to increase by 0.25 points at top schools.

Announcement of benchmark scores on June 26

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that on June 26, it will announce the standard scores for grade 10.

Candidates who need to have their exam papers reviewed can submit their application at the secondary school where they studied. Secondary schools that are the locations for the 2025 high school graduation exam are responsible for providing guidance and arranging a convenient area to receive review applications, without affecting the organization of the graduation exam. The review applications from secondary schools must be collected by the Department of Education and Training and submitted to the Department of Examinations and Education Quality Assessment before 10:00 a.m. on June 28. The review results are expected to be announced on July 11.

From July 12 to 14, the HCM City Department of Education and Training will organize additional admissions for those whose scores have changed after the review. Candidates eligible for additional admission must submit their admission applications no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 17.
