The workshop was attended by representatives of units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , research institutes, universities, international organizations (GIZ), industry associations, local management agencies, businesses, hatcheries and shrimp and crab farming households in the region.

Dr. Ngo Tien Chuong, Project Manager of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), spoke at the workshop.

According to information from the conference, in the first 5 months of 2025, the shrimp seed industry achieved positive results with nearly 71,000 imported parent shrimp (up 11.7% over the same period) and 11,500 domestically produced shrimp seeds. The total shrimp seed output reached 90.77 billion, including 28 billion black tiger shrimp and 62.77 billion white-leg shrimp. At the same time, nearly 47,000 codes of feed products and aquaculture environmental treatment products were received.

The Mekong Delta continues to be the largest aquaculture production center in the country, accounting for 70% of the farming area, 65% of output and 65% of export turnover. However, diseases, especially in mud crabs, are a major challenge. Currently, diseases in crabs are not monitored in the VAHIS system. In Ca Mau alone, the disease appears frequently in the hot season, causing losses of 30-35%, mainly due to Fortonion parasites and environmental fluctuations. However, prevention work is still facing many difficulties due to unsynchronized infrastructure, lack of early warning systems, few biosafety facilities, limited scientific research and lack of specialized human resources.

Attending the workshop, delegates proposed key solutions: improving the aquatic veterinary system, improving management capacity, epidemiological research, building regional biosafety procedures, proactively monitoring the environment, and promoting community education and training. The orientation for the coming time is to shift from passive to proactive, linking disease management to value chains and farming areas; enhancing the application of science and technology , digital transformation, promoting public-private partnership and adapting to climate change.

Delegates presented papers at the conference.

This workshop is a forum for parties to assess the current situation of the epidemic, share experiences and propose synchronous solutions towards sustainable development of the aquaculture industry in the Mekong Delta.
