On the morning of June 27, candidates taking the high school graduation exam in English completed the 50-minute test. This year, the number of candidates choosing to take the English exam under the 2018 GeneralEducation Program (GEP) is more than 352,000.

Evaluating the exam, Mr. Vu Ha Thanh Luan, an English teacher at MV Lomonosov Secondary and High School ( Hanoi ) said that the structure of the English exam ensures that it is in line with the illustrated exam matrix announced by the Ministry of Education and Training. The exam questions are in 4 main types: Reading and filling in words and phrases in notices, advertisements, and flyers; Arranging sentences to form conversations, letters, and paragraphs; Reading and filling in clauses and sentences in paragraphs; Reading and understanding paragraphs and answering questions.

Mr. Luan commented that in the first year of implementing the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, the English exam structure has completely changed compared to previous years, meeting the orientation of assessing capacity according to requirements, the content of the questions focuses mainly on students' reading comprehension ability.

“The reading topics closely follow the topics in the 2018 General Education Program. The topics are close to life: environmental protection, spending management, festivals, technology,... In terms of grammar, students can easily recognize it, without being puzzled.

In particular, many vocabulary words in the long reading passage are presented at an advanced level. This will cause difficulties for students who want to get a score of 8.5 or higher. Students need to have a good vocabulary, reading comprehension skills, paraphrasing skills and the ability to reason based on context to achieve high scores. This is a quality test and handling these 40 questions in 50 minutes is a challenge for good students," Mr. Luan analyzed.

Therefore, according to Mr. Luan, the exam ensures two goals: to consider high school graduation and to serve as a basis for university admission.

With this exam, Mr. Luan predicts the score range will be between 5.5-6.5.

MSc. An Thuy Linh, teacher at Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School, assessed that the test is up-to-date, testing both language and basic knowledge in life. This test trains students in reading and understanding documents, communication situations, writing short paragraphs, writing flyers, advertisements, announcements, etc.

The topics in the lesson are rich, similar to the topics in the 12th grade textbook. However, the amount of vocabulary and grammar structures used is at a much more advanced level than the amount of words in the textbook.

According to Ms. Linh, the test is highly differentiated. Students who study English as a major subject in university entrance exams can commonly get a score of 6-8; other students can get 4-5 points.

“With 50 minutes, students who work carefully and seriously may run out of time because the amount of information and language is long and extensive. This year, English may have few 10s. Good students can get 8-9 points,” said Ms. Linh.
