Skin signs warning of vitamin D deficiency

VnExpressVnExpress17/11/2023

People with vitamin D deficiency are prone to acne, skin aging faster, wrinkles, peeling and hair loss.

Vitamin D is closely related to the process of building and maintaining bone health, supporting anti-inflammatory, immune system, maintaining muscle function and providing antioxidants. Vitamin D deficiency can cause muscle pain, muscle weakness, bone pain and negative effects on the skin.

Below are signs that your body lacks this nutrient.

Acne

Vitamin D helps regulate the proliferation of keratinocytes and sebum. This nutrient also has antioxidant properties, preventing acne from appearing. A 2016 study by Chungnam National University (Korea) on 160 people, half of whom had acne, showed that people with acne had lower levels of vitamin D than people with normal skin.

Signs of premature aging

Telomeres are the caps at the ends of chromosomes. As people age, telomeres shorten and wrinkle. A 2007 study of more than 2,000 women, conducted by King's College London, found that those with high serum vitamin D levels had longer telomeres than those deficient in the vitamin.

Dry skin

Dry skin and an itchy feeling on your face are signs of vitamin D deficiency. In some cases, people who do not get enough of this vitamin are also at risk of eczema due to immune system dysfunction. Low serum vitamin D levels are associated with increased incidence of eczema and worsening of symptoms.

Hair loss

Vitamin D plays a role in creating new hair follicles, helping hair maintain thickness and preventing breakage. This vitamin also helps regulate cell cycles, supporting hair growth.

According to a study by the Sisli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital (Türkiye), people with alopecia areata have lower vitamin D levels than normal people. The lower the vitamin level, the more severe the disease. This study was published in 2014 with nearly 200 participants.

Dull skin

Vitamin D provides nutrients to the body, contributing to the regeneration of skin cells. Therefore, a lack of vitamin D can make the skin look dull and grayish, leading to aggravation of pigmentation, dark circles and preventing wound healing.

The body has a lot of vitamin D when eating fatty fish, mushrooms, egg yolks, liver, dairy products. Vitamin D is also known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the body produces this vitamin when exposed to sunlight. Sunbathing for about 20 minutes, especially within 6-8 hours, is good for the skin.
