Present at Fanatics Fest in Manhattan (USA) last weekend, FIFA President Gianni Infantino admitted that the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 has faced some criticism. But according to him, that is inevitable because this is a new and unique tournament.
"I am not surprised by some complaints about the Club World Cup. The reason is because the tournament is so new and very special," said the FIFA President. "This is a real World Cup, bringing together the strongest teams at the club level with the best players."
Infantino also explained the birth of the tournament, which sports analyst Jordan Schultz jokingly calls the "Gianni Cup": "At some point, someone had to invent a World Cup for clubs. For the past 100 years we have always determined which country is the strongest in the world through the World Cup, but at the club level, until today it has not been possible to determine. Creating a World Cup for clubs to decide that is not a bad idea."
While the Club World Cup has been held before, this summer’s 32-team event with a $1 billion prize fund is unprecedented. As the tournament moves to the United States, Infantino has highlighted soccer as a way to make money and achieve success.
"The Club World Cup, along with next year's World Cup, is a message to young people in America. If you are good and talented, there is no need to look for another sport, because through football, there is a path to glory and money," said the FIFA President.
