Start by building a training program

Over the past decades, several terms have been used by scholars to refer to interculturaleducation, such as cross-cultural, multicultural, and intercultural education. Although they are called differently, these terms all aim at a common goal: to promote dialogue and cooperation between individuals from different cultures.

Presenting a report on “The current state of intercultural education to develop the capacity to build positive relationships for university students in early childhood education”, MSc. Hoang Thu Huyen (Hanoi Capital University) stated: the issue of using intercultural education to develop the capacity to build positive relationships has been and is being implemented at universities. However, the level of use is still not high.

The reason for this situation is explained by the fact that the duration of each training module is shortened, while the specialized knowledge is more. In particular, the education of the capacity to build positive relationships does not have a separate module in the training program, is not determined in the output standards, but is actively integrated by the lecturer in the activities and modules. Therefore, there are no separate teaching materials, leading to difficulties in using intercultural education to develop this capacity.

Agreeing with this point of view, Dr. Trinh Thuy Huong ( Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema) emphasized: training human resources to meet the trend of internationalization of education must start from building training programs.

Dr. Trinh Thuy Huong proposed to develop course objectives that meet the output standards of the training program with content on intercultural communication. This includes equipping learners with the ability to handle cultural differences flexibly and effectively, comply with cultural norms and be appropriate to each specific communication situation.

For example, the Intercultural Communication course compiled by the faculty of the Faculty of Basic Sciences of Hanoi University of Industry has brought practical values. The course content focuses on basic communication skills in a multicultural working environment, helping students feel confident when approaching international communication contexts.

Create a multicultural communication environment

In the context of international integration and expanding career opportunities, studying languages is becoming more and more attractive, attracting the attention of many students. Along with this trend, intercultural education is gradually becoming an indispensable element in the training program, playing an important role in promoting cooperative relationships with foreign partners and improving integration capacity.

Scholar from the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University, Dr. Nguyen Thi Huong Tra presented a study on integrating intercultural education into the Japanese language curriculum. With the mission of improving foreign language skills and cultural knowledge, the training program has concretized the role of intercultural education through cultural subjects such as “Japanese Studies” and “Cultural Exchange”.

Although the number of subjects in this field is limited, it partly reflects the importance of cultural education in language training, and at the same time sees the relationship between these two aspects, creating a foundation for students to communicate effectively in an international environment.

Not stopping there, Hanoi University is also one of the leading units in internationalizing education. According to MSc. Nguyen Thi Thuy, students here are highly aware of the importance of intercultural communication and actively develop this capacity.

With more than 2,953 international students participating in training programs from 2016 to 2021, Hanoi University has built a multicultural learning environment, becoming a model in promoting international integration and cooperation.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy also added that to promote intercultural communication skills, universities need to implement training programs and in-depth cultural exchange activities for both international and Vietnamese students, creating a multicultural communication environment on-site. This not only helps students develop their adaptability but also equips them with the skills to work and study effectively in a global context.

Giving opinions at the discussion session, experts agreed that intercultural education, when integrated systematically, will not only help students understand and respect differences but also become a strategic tool to expand future career opportunities.
