(NLDO) - The 2024 flood season with unpredictable fluctuations has posed an urgent need to improve disaster forecasting and prevention.

On the afternoon of December 25, the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station held a workshop to assess flood developments in the Mekong Delta (MD) in 2024.

The workshop was attended by experts and staff of the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station.

According to a report from the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, during the 2024 rainy and flood season, there will be 10 storms and 1 tropical depression in the East Sea, lower than the average of many years.

Rainfall recorded during the period from June to August was lower than the average of many years. However, from September to October, rainfall fluctuated at approximately the same level or higher than the same period of many years. Notably, the heaviest rainfall during the season was mainly concentrated in the months of July, August and September, with the peak in September due to the influence of super typhoon No. 3 ( Yagi ).

Nguyen Minh Giam, former Deputy Director of the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that weather forecasting is currently facing many challenges. These difficulties include the complexity of the river system, the impact of hydropower construction, urbanization that changes natural flows, the lack of monitoring data in remote areas, and the increasing impact of climate change.

The expert also emphasized that the unpredictable flood season in 2024 has created an urgent need to improve disaster forecasting and prevention. According to him, measures that need to be implemented include investing in upgrading early warning systems, promoting monitoring, building more accurate forecasting models, and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technology in meteorological forecasting and early warning. At the same time, raising public awareness in this field is necessary to optimize the ability to respond to emergency situations.

In particular, in the coming time, the Southern Hydrometeorological Station will apply rain forecasting based on Synop data, analyze and survey the feasibility to forecast rainfall at stations in Vietnam for the next day with the current day; build an AI model to forecast rainfall.

The Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station organized a workshop to assess flood developments in the Mekong Delta in 2024.

Mr. Pham Ho Quoc Tuan, Deputy Director of the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, added that in the coming time, the Station will focus on researching and developing forecasting methods based on AI technology in addition to maintaining traditional methods. The goal is to improve the detail and accuracy of forecasts for each specific location.

According to Mr. Tuan, this direction not only improves the quality of forecasting but also helps promote the automation and modernization of the unit's technology, contributing to reducing human resources and effectively supporting socio -economic development in the coming time.
