A man named Kim, a former Samsung employee, has been arrested on charges of providing the South Korean manufacturer’s chip technology secrets to a company in China. According to South Korean media, Kim was once the head of a Samsung division.

Prosecutors accused Kim of violating South Korea's technology industry protection law by stealing information related to 16nm DRAM semiconductor chips held by Samsung and selling them to ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a Chinese semiconductor manufacturing company, officials said.

Phone Arena quoted a source confirming that the damage from information theft and technology sales amounted to 2,300 billion won (about 1.8 billion USD) for Samsung.

Little is known about this person. According to Tom's Hardware, Mr. Kim was a full-time employee but left Samsung in 2016 and then joined CXMT in China. There, Kim received an annual salary of several million USD, which is considered "unusual".

Along with Kim, another person named Bang was arrested, with initial information describing this person as a former "subcontractor of Samsung". Both were residing in China, and recently returned to their homeland and were arrested on charges of violating the Korean Industrial Technology Leak Prevention and Protection Act . Previously, in May 2023, the Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported on the incident and requested an investigation.
