Elon Musk sues Apple and OpenAI

Elon Musk's xAI and X Corp. have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of maintaining an illegal monopoly in the artificial intelligence industry. The lawsuit focuses on the integration of ChatGPT into iPhones through the Apple Intelligence platform.

Musk claimed that Apple had “prioritized” ChatGPT in the App Store, which “left out” competing AI apps like Grok and X. He claimed that iPhone users were forced to use ChatGPT as the default chatbot, reducing the reach of third-party apps.

According to the lawsuit, Apple and OpenAI have “locked up the market” to prevent competitors. ChatGPT’s deep integration into the iPhone operating system gives OpenAI access to billions of interactions from hundreds of millions of devices, creating an unfair advantage.

OpenAI called the lawsuit “part of a pattern of ongoing harassment” by Musk. Meanwhile, Apple has insisted that the App Store is designed to be “fair and unbiased,” denying Musk’s claims.

Testing self-driving cars in the heart of New York

Waymo has just been granted permits to test self-driving cars in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn — two of New York City’s busiest areas. This is the first time the city has granted permits for “pilot deployment” of self-driving cars, marking a major milestone in the smart transportation industry.

Even though Waymo is testing autonomous vehicles, it still has to ensure that a driver is behind the wheel during testing. This is required by New York state law, which does not yet allow fully autonomous vehicles.

Waymo must regularly submit test data to the Department of Transportation to demonstrate compliance with safety and security standards, especially around cybersecurity.

Not only is New York densely populated, it also has a chaotic traffic system, full of pedestrians, cyclists, taxis, and unpredictable situations. Testing here is an extremely rigorous test for self-driving technology — if it passes, Waymo will have a solid foundation to expand its service to other major cities.

Waymo is allowed to deploy up to eight vehicles until the end of September 2025, after which the company can apply for an extension. At the same time, it is lobbying for a change in the law that would allow fully autonomous vehicles in the future.

China builds national computing platform

China is pushing to build a nationwide integrated computing platform to improve the quality and efficiency of computing resources. The goal is to strengthen core technology capabilities such as AI chips and large-scale language modeling algorithms.

According to experts, computing power is a key factor in the global technology race. Every 1 yuan invested in computing can generate 3-4 yuan of GDP growth. China is currently growing its computing power by about 30% per year.

The new platform is described as a “unified network” that coordinates resources across regions. For example, businesses in the east can use idle resources in the west to save costs. A medical company in Beijing completed an AI task for just 10,000 yuan, instead of more than 2 million.

The platform currently has more than 1,000 registered businesses, nearly 100 large language models connected, serving more than 1,000 developers.

Homegrown AI chip companies like Cambricon Technologies are growing strongly. Cambricon shares have risen more than 562% since September 2024 and are now among the most expensive stocks on the A-share market.
