US President Biden's son pleads guilty to two charges

On June 20, Mr. Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, agreed to plead guilty to two charges related to income tax and illegal use of guns.

In a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Delaware, Hunter Biden, a lawyer and lobbyist, admitted to failing to file timely tax returns when he earned more than $1.5 million in income in 2017 and 2018.

During those two years, he owed more than $100,000 in taxes on the income. Each charge carries a sentence of up to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to $100,000 or twice the amount of money he earned through the crime.

Hunter Biden also pleaded guilty to one count of illegally possessing a Colt Cobra during this period, despite being a controlled substance addict.

The allegations against Hunter Biden arose from a five-year investigation by David Weiss, the US attorney in Delaware appointed by former President Donald Trump.

Hunter Biden’s plea agreement still needs to be approved by a federal judge. However, according to US media, Hunter Biden may not face a prison sentence and will only receive a suspended sentence related to federal tax evasion charges.

Regarding the charge of illegal gun possession, he will not be prosecuted but will have to participate in a rehabilitation and rehabilitation program.

In a statement, Christopher Clark, an attorney for Hunter Biden, said the agreement with federal prosecutors would resolve the Justice Department 's long-running criminal investigation.

“I know that Mr. Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for the mistakes he made during a chaotic and addictive period in his life,” said Attorney Clark. “He is eager to recover and move forward.”

According to CNN , Hunter Biden's plea agreement will have an immediate impact on the 2024 presidential election. It will be exploited by Republicans in an attempt to cause political damage to incumbent President Joe Biden, who has announced his re-election bid in 2024.

Responding to the plea agreement, the White House said: “The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life. We will have no further comment.”
