Drogheda United, an Irish club, are now owned by the Trivela Group, which also controls Danish side Silkeborg IF, which also qualifies for the Conference League.
Under UEFA rules, two clubs with the same ownership cannot compete in the same continental competition. With Silkeborg ranked higher, they were awarded a place in the Conference League, while Drogheda were eliminated.
The Irish club have voiced their opposition and said they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). In an official statement, Drogheda said UEFA had been inconsistent in how it implemented the new regulations: “We have put forward a number of options, including a share split and a trust agreement, but all have been rejected. We feel this decision is harsh and unfair.”

The situation has Crystal Palace fans worried. The Selhurst Park outfit have qualified for the 2025/26 Europa League after winning the FA Cup, but the threat of elimination hangs over them as their largest shareholder, John Textor, is also the majority owner of Olympique Lyon, the French side who will also be in Europe’s second-tier competition next season.
Palace have argued that Textor has no controlling interest in the club, but if UEFA takes the same stance as Drogheda, Palace could be stripped of their European place. John Textor is understood to be urgently looking to sell his stake in Palace to resolve the crisis. He has reportedly received an offer from New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.
If the deal is completed before 27 June, when UEFA makes its final decision, Palace will have the chance to keep their precious Europa League ticket. However, time is running out, and the risk of being “devastated” like Drogheda is entirely possible if things are not handled promptly.
