Ajax expels 7 players from first team

Ajax Amsterdam have taken the unprecedented step of removing seven players from their pre-season training and match plans as part of a major overhaul under new coach John Heitinga.

Ajax are undergoing a rebuild.

The “black list” includes Chuba Akpom, Carlos Forbs, Borna Sosa, Kristian Hlynsson, Christian Rasmussen, Jay Gorter and Branco van den Boomen. This information was confirmed by De Telegraaf , citing sources close to the club. Accordingly, Technical Director Alex Kroes sent a direct message to the players via WhatsApp - a cold but decisive approach.

Not only were they excluded from the first team squad, they were also subject to strict rules. They were only allowed to use the training ground and gym after the main team's lunchtime, and if the team had two training sessions in a day, they had to wait until after the second session to access the facilities.

Even private parking spaces were taken away and there was only one physiotherapist to serve the group.

Ajax's tough move is not only a technical decision, but also a strategic move to "clean up" the chaotic legacy left by former Director Sven Mislintat. In less than 5 months of work (from May to September 2023), Mislintat spent up to 120 million euros to recruit 12 players - most of whom did not meet expectations, while still enjoying sky-high salaries.

Four of the seven names that have just been dropped from the plan (Akpom, Forbs, Sosa and Van den Boomen) were contracts brought by Mislintat. Notably, because Ajax have qualified for next season's Champions League, the contract clause automatically increases their salaries by 50%.

The trio of Akpom, Forbs and Sosa alone will cost the club more than 10 million euros in wages alone - a huge burden for players who do not contribute significantly. As for the remaining three players - Hlynsson, Gorter and Rasmussen - the Ajax board simply no longer sees enough potential to keep them.

With strict restrictions on training hours, facilities, and a clear message from the board, the future of all seven players is almost decided. They are no longer in Ajax's plans for next season.

According to Voetbal International reporter Tim van Duijn, there have been initial contacts from other clubs, opening up hope of a revival for the group of "frozen" players.

Ajax has sent a clear message not just to those who were eliminated, but to the rest of the club that the easy times are over. After a disappointing season, the storied Dutch club are tightening up their discipline and finances to get back to the top. And this purge, while brutal, may be a necessary step.
