In a simple level 4 house at 16 Nguyen Khoa Chiem, An Tay Ward, Thuan Hoa District ( Hue City) at the foot of Ngu Binh Mountain, martial artist Ton That Binh calmly brews a pot of hot tea to welcome guests. The voice of the man over 70 years old still resonates, full of inner strength when talking about his journey of pursuing his passion for martial arts since his youth. The house he lives in is also the ancestral hall where he is the head of the two northern Shaolin sects, Vi Da and Hong sect, Hau Quyen Dao.
Lifelong passion for martial arts
Every day, martial arts master Ton That Binh wakes up at 4am to practice martial arts. Right behind his house is a small training ground for martial arts disciples. He is also in charge of the Hong Phai Hau Quyen Dao Club at Huyen Khong Pagoda, which specializes in teaching Buddhists who are passionate about martial arts.
Martial arts master Ton That Binh said his family's circumstances were difficult. At the age of 15, he pursued his passion for martial arts by... secretly learning at the martial arts school of martial arts master Truong Thang on the banks of the An Cuu River.
Every day, when martial arts master Truong Thang taught martial arts to his students, young Ton That Binh quietly stood against the wall, observing and memorizing each stance and power in the martial arts moves. At home, in the evening, young Binh went out to the yard, recalled the moves he observed, and practiced. His curiosity and strong passion helped him overcome barriers and absorb each basic technique. Those days were his first lessons in life, forging perseverance and determination.

When he passed the entrance exam to Quy Nhon Pedagogical University, he had the opportunity to approach Taekwondo, and at the same time became a disciple of a martial arts master from Binh Dinh, acquiring more of the quintessence of traditional martial arts. Returning to Hue, Ton That Binh constantly sought to improve himself. He became a disciple of martial arts master Nguyen Gia, head of the Northern Shaolin sect Vi Da, a martial arts school in Con Hen (Vy Da Ward, Hue City).
His inquisitive spirit and thirst for learning made his master trust him and give him the position of 19th Head of the sect. Later, when master Nguyen Gia followed his wife's family to live in Quang Ngai , he continued to be in charge of teaching martial arts of the Shaolin Vi Da sect in Hue.
I bow to my teacher
In 1977, the biggest turning point in his martial arts journey was his decision to join the Hou Quan sect. This martial arts school was founded by Master Hoang Thanh, who was younger than him and lived a few hundred meters from his home.
At that time, although he was already a taekwondo coach and the head of the Northern Shaolin Vi Da sect, martial artist Ton That Binh was still not confident in his knowledge when standing in the martial arts world. He always wanted to learn from a master so that he could stand firmly in front of his students. He shared his thoughts with his fellow martial artist Nguyen Van Anh and was directed by Mr. Anh to find martial artist Hoang Thanh to learn "monkey martial arts".

Martial arts master Ton That Binh recalled that at that time, martial arts master Hoang Thanh was a disciple of martial arts master Truong Canh of the Shaolin Nam Son sect in Hue. During a gathering of martial arts world in Hue, martial arts master Hoang Thanh boldly asked his teacher and other martial arts masters for permission to perform a new form that he had the "chance" to learn, the Monkey King Fist. The form was based on the spirit of a monkey - flexible, gentle, supple, surprising and even shocking the martial arts world. After performing the form, martial arts master Hoang Thanh boldly asked the sects to send their best people to compete, exchange, and introduce the strange martial art. With just one monkey move, he defeated most of the best disciples of the sects.

After that event, martial artist Hoang Thanh announced the founding of the Hau Quyen Dao martial art school in Hue. Admiring the martial art talent of martial artist Hoang Thanh, martial artist Ton That Binh sought him out and became the head disciple of the Hau Quyen Dao school from then on.
The martial art of Monkey Fist uses softness to overcome hardness, making martial arts moves become art when the movements are not just techniques but also the harmony between the body, mind and spirit. "Monkey Fist trains softness, relaxation, focusing on tendons, ligaments, joints of limbs and eyes to achieve agility, suppleness and flexibility. With natural breathing and graceful movements, students not only achieve agility but also nourish their health and spirit", shared martial arts master Ton That Binh.
According to martial arts master Ton That Binh, martial arts is not only about learning moves, but also about spreading life philosophy and how to be a useful person. The Monkey Fist sect is not only a self-defense method but also has health benefits, helping the body to be healthy and the mind to be peaceful. Therefore, for more than 15 years, martial arts classes here have both imparted techniques and aroused the students' determination and willpower. With the concept of "teaching martial arts is to enlighten the mind", through each exercise, he teaches the students the spirit of humanity, responsibility and morality, helping them stay away from useless things, focusing on training their qualities and determination.
Martial arts for him is not only a subject of study, but also a bond between master, disciple and brother. After more than half a century of being involved in martial arts, he realized that martial arts families love each other more than blood relatives. This love is a strong source of motivation for true martial arts practitioners to live morally, contributing to the community and society. (to be continued)
