President Vo Van Thuong met with President Putin on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, discussing measures to strengthen bilateral relations.

Meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this afternoon in Beijing, China, President Vo Van Thuong said that Vietnam always considers Russia one of its top important partners and wishes to develop a comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia in all fields.

He suggested that Russia continue to grant scholarships to Vietnamese students to study, increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and continue to care for and create conditions for the Vietnamese community to live, work, and study stably and long-term in this country.

According to President Putin, Vietnam is one of Russia's most important partners in the Asia- Pacific region. The two leaders said that Vietnam and Russia still have much potential and room to further develop bilateral relations.

President Putin agreed with President Vo Van Thuong on major directions and measures to promote bilateral relations in the coming time.

President Vo Van Thuong invited President Putin to visit Vietnam and the Russian leader accepted. The Kremlin leader also invited President Vo Van Thuong to visit Russia at an appropriate time.

President Vo Van Thuong and President Putin along with leaders of many countries are in Beijing to attend the third Belt and Road Forum (BRF) taking place from October 17-20.

Vietnam and Russia established diplomatic relations in 1950. Last year, the two countries celebrated the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, by the end of 2022, Russia had 164 investment projects in Vietnam with a total investment of 965.8 million USD, ranking 27th out of 140 countries and territories with direct investment in Vietnam. Vietnam invested in Russia with 5 projects with a total investment of 528 million USD in the fields of industry, processing and manufacturing.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, two-way trade between Vietnam and Russia in 2022 will reach 3.55 billion USD. In 2023, Russia will offer 1,000 scholarships to Vietnamese students. Currently, there are about 5,000 Vietnamese students studying in this country.
