Allowing archaeological excavations at My Son Temple Complex

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong signed Decision No. 1263/QD-BVHTTDL on the archaeological excavation of Tower Group L in My Son Temple Complex.

Decision to allow the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board to coordinate with the Institute of Monuments Conservation, the Institute of Archaeology and the CM Lerici Foundation (Italy) to conduct archaeological excavations at Tower Group L of My Son Temple Complex, Duy Phu Commune, Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province from May 9, 2025 to July 30, 2025.

The permitted excavation area is 150m2 (10m x 15m/01 hole) under the chairmanship of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quy, Institute of Archaeology.

The decision requires that, before excavation, relevant agencies need to prepare measures to reinforce, strengthen, and support to protect the original state of the architectural foundation that will be exposed as well as the remaining architectural components of the tower.

During archaeological excavations, licensed agencies must pay attention to protecting the stratigraphy of the relic; have the responsibility to propagate to the people about the protection of local cultural heritage, and not announce official conclusions without the agreement of the competent agency and the Department of Cultural Heritage.

The My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province are responsible for preserving and protecting artifacts collected during archaeological excavations, avoiding damage or loss, and reporting to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on plans to protect and promote the value of those artifacts.

After the completion of the archaeological excavation, the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board, the Institute of Monuments Conservation and the Institute of Archaeology must have a preliminary report and propose a plan for management and protection of the archaeological excavation area within one month at the latest and a scientific report within one year at the latest, sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Before announcing the results of archaeological excavations in Vietnam, Italy and internationally, the licensed agencies must discuss and reach an agreement with the Department of Cultural Heritage. The My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board, the Institute of Monuments Conservation and the Institute of Archaeology must be responsible for the announcement of the results of archaeological excavations in the country and abroad according to the provisions of law.
