The Trump administration has launched a TikTok account, a move that has attracted attention as the Chinese social media platform would have been banned from operating in the US under a national security law that took effect in January 2025.
The White House’s first post on August 19 was a 27-second video captioned with the catchy phrase: “America is back! Hello TikTok!” Within an hour of “hello community,” the account had attracted about 4,500 followers.
Meanwhile, President Trump's personal TikTok account currently has more than 110.1 million followers, although the last post was on November 5, 2024 - the presidential election day.
TikTok, owned by tech giant ByteDance, has long been targeted by Washington over national security concerns. A federal law requires the app to be sold to a non-Chinese owner or face being banned in the US – a move that was supposed to take effect just before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025.
However, after taking office, President Trump temporarily suspended the ban. Last June, he extended TikTok's 90-day grace period to find a buyer, before the mid-September deadline.
It is noteworthy that President Trump himself, who once strongly called for banning or forcing TikTok to divest, has now reversed his stance.
According to observers, he believes that this platform has helped him reach young people and gain an advantage in the November 2024 election.
President Trump is currently one of the most influential politicians on TikTok. In addition to his 110.1 million followers on the platform, he has 108.5 million followers on X. However, his favorite social network is still Truth Social, which he owns, with 10.6 million followers.
Compared to the White House, the agency's official account has only 2.4 million followers on X and 9.3 million on Instagram./.
