(CLO) Just one day after dissolving the government, the Burkina Faso military government appointed Mr. Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, formerly a journalist and Minister of Communications, as the new Prime Minister.

The decision came just a day after military leader Ibrahim Traore dismissed Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela and dissolved the government.

Mr Ouédraogo is a journalist. Before entering politics , he was editor-in-chief and director of the Sahel state television network.

He is also a close aide to leader Traore, who appointed him as Minister of Communications and government spokesman after the coup in September 2022.

He remained a key civilian figure in the military government and held this position through three cabinet reshuffles.

Burkina Faso has been experiencing prolonged unrest since a January 2022 coup led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

However, just eight months later, Damiba was overthrown in another coup by Colonel Ibrahim Traore.

Under Mr Traore's leadership, the West African country, along with its neighbours Mali and Niger, decided to cut ties with its former colonial power, France.
