Reuters news agency said the decision was made amid deepening disagreements between parties in the coalition, especially over refugee policy and energy efficiency.

At a press conference, Prime Minister Bjarni said the election is scheduled to take place on November 30, provided that President Halla Tomasdottir approves the dissolution of parliament.

Under Icelandic law, elections must be held no later than 45 days after the decision to dissolve parliament is announced.

Prime Minister Bjarni, head of the right-wing Independence Party, has informed the leaders of other parties in the coalition of his decision. He is expected to meet President Halla Tomasdottir on October 14 to discuss the dissolution of parliament.

This event marks an important turning point in Icelandic politics. Mr. Bjarni Benediktsson was elected Prime Minister in April this year, replacing Ms. Katrin Jakobsdottir after she resigned to run for President.

Iceland is a European island nation with a parliamentary republic system. The president does not typically have extensive executive powers because many of them are delegated to the head of government .

Parties in Iceland will be competing for 63 seats in the Althing, of which 9 seats will be allocated to parties with more than 5% of the vote and 54 seats will be allocated to parties based on vote share without a threshold limit.

According to the Icelandic Parliament's regulations, parliamentary elections take place every four years.
