In the first sinking, the German charity RESQSHIP, which operates the rescue ship Nadir, rescued 51 people from a sinking wooden boat, including two unconscious people, and discovered 10 bodies. The survivors were handed over to the Italian coast guard to be brought ashore.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said the ship was carrying 61 people who had departed from Libya, including migrants from Syria, Egypt, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The second sinking occurred about 200km east of Calabria, Italy, when a boat from Türkiye caught fire and capsized, killing one person and leaving about 60 missing. Eleven people were rescued by the Italian coast guard and brought to shore.

The number of people who died or went missing trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to enter Europe illegally rose by two-thirds last year and shows no sign of slowing, despite the risks faced on this dangerous sea route.
