Spain became the second team to qualify for the round of 16 of EURO 2024, after hosts Germany. In the early morning of June 21, La Roja defeated Italy with a score of 1-0.

Coach Luis de la Fuente's players were the better team than the defending champions, with a total of 20 shots. However, while goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was excellent, or the goal denied the red-shirt players, the decisive goal came from an Italian defender, Riccardo Calafiori.

However, at the last second of 5 minutes of extra time, Luka Jovic saved Serbia, pulling back 1 point as well as the hope of competing for 3rd place.
