With the rise of computers and writing software, many parents think that teaching their children to write well is a waste of time.
As one of the parents who sent her child to a tutor to practice beautiful handwriting, Ms. Khieu Thi Lan Anh (37 years old, Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi ) said that straight, beautiful, clear sentences show the solemnity and carefulness of the writer. On the contrary, those who write badly are often careless. That is why, although her son is only in grade 3, he has spent nearly 4 years practicing beautiful handwriting.
“Since kindergarten, when my child was 5 years old, I have taken him to practice writing beautifully. Although the tuition fee is not cheap, on average from 250,000 - 300,000 VND/session, 2 sessions a week, but seeing my child write beautifully and neatly, I am very happy” , Ms. Lan Anh said, adding that children need to practice writing beautifully from a young age, so that when they go to middle school or high school, they can write quickly and read. If we do not practice now, when the child grows up, his handwriting will be as bad as a chicken scratch, and it will be too late to regret.

Being a person who likes beautiful handwriting, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Ha (34 years old, Thai Binh ) is also proud when looking at the round, solid handwriting of her daughter who is in 5th grade. The female parent said that although her daughter's handwriting is not bad, she always wants her child to have "clean notebooks and beautiful handwriting", so she sent her child to study at the center as soon as she entered 1st grade.
So far, her daughter has undergone two basic and advanced calligraphy courses, costing nearly 10 million VND in total. “I write not only for myself but also to convey the content to others. If the page were a face, would you prefer a dirty or clean face?” , Ms. Ha said.
Not only Ms. Lan Anh and Ms. Ha, but currently there are many families who let their children practice beautiful handwriting at beautiful handwriting training centers with high prices. These parents all believe that, regardless of the era, this is very important, contributing to helping children practice patience, meticulousness, and carefulness.
On the contrary, many people also ask, why do we force students to write beautifully? According to Ms. Bui Thi Nhan (40 years old, Hoang Mai, Hanoi), practicing beautiful writing does not have much value, and does not even determine the future success of children.
“In the digital age, children mainly study and use computers and phones, so what is the point of practicing beautiful handwriting? Instead of wasting time teaching children who are not naturally gifted in beautiful handwriting, wouldn’t it be better to teach them how to read, write correctly, and even type quickly?” , the female parent expressed.
Agreeing with the above viewpoint, parent Duong Thu Phuong (29 years old, Dong Da, Hanoi) said that the concept of "handwriting reflects personality" in today's society is somewhat outdated. Doing math, writing literature, learning to play an instrument, even playing soccer, jumping rope all help children practice patience, meticulousness and concentration, not just practicing beautiful handwriting.
“Currently, children have many things to learn, from soft skills to book knowledge. Therefore, it would be a waste of time if we forced children to practice writing for several hours every day,” Ms. Phuong said, adding that we only need to require children to write clearly, with enough strokes, and be easy to read.
No one has the right to force children to practice writing.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao Linh, a teacher in Hanoi, in this debate, each parent has their own right opinion. However, no one has the right to force children to practice writing, even teachers are not qualified to do that.
"Parents should let their children practice writing beautifully based on their love and interest, not because of achievements. Absolutely do not force or put pressure on children," Ms. Linh emphasized.
The female teacher advised parents not to neglect handwriting practice. Beautiful handwriting is not necessary, but overall legible, clear, and coherent handwriting is still necessary, both in study and in life.

Discussing this issue, MSc. Nguyen Thi Mai Anh, Deputy Director of the Institute of Humanistic Psychology, said that throughout the history of Vietnam as well as developed countries such as England, America, Russia, and France, writing has always been important, considering it the basis for preserving the nation's culture.
The saying "handwriting reflects character" is very true in the process of teaching children to write. Practicing beautiful handwriting brings many benefits that everyone knows such as: cultivating the virtues of perseverance, carefulness, and meticulousness. In addition, focusing on each stroke of the handwriting not only shows respect for the reader, but also creates cultural beauty in communication through writing.
"We should not use excuses to justify the need to teach children to read and write and to support laziness. Science and technology were born to make work more convenient. Its convenience should not turn people into lazy, dependent individuals," Ms. Mai Anh emphasized.
However, according to Master Nguyen Thi Mai Anh, parents should not force their children to practice writing too beautifully, in the "dragon flying phoenix dancing" style, and should not be willing to spend large sums of money for their children to go to training centers early in the morning and late at night just for the sake of achievement, causing health and economic problems for the child and the family.
Parents can accompany their children in practicing each stroke, by referring to scientific bases and age-appropriate handwriting standards announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.
Besides the efforts of students in the journey of practicing handwriting and character, parents and teachers should also have an objective, humane, and open view of writing. They should not be too strict, stereotyped, or require students to write correctly in every stroke and millimeter.
“After practicing, just seeing your children's handwriting is more beautiful than before is considered a success. Don't compare your children's handwriting with others. Let your children's handwriting be written with excitement and enjoyment, not just straight lines without emotion," the female expert expressed.
