Original substance
Lychee was planted in Thanh Ha more than 150 years ago by Mr. Hoang Van Com, a native of Thanh Son commune (Thanh Ha). The fertile alluvial land along the Thai Binh river has become an “ideal resting place” for lychee trees to grow, producing sweet, rich fruit of outstanding quality.
Also from this land, lychee has been grown in many other regions across the country, especially Bac Giang and some provinces in the Central Highlands. Thanh Ha lychee has become a specialty of Hai Duong that no one can deny.
Thanh Ha litchi has been protected as a geographical indication since 2007. Currently, litchi has been exported to 30 countries and territories, including Japan, the US, and Australia, which are markets with the strictest quality standards in the world. Compared to many other types of litchi, Thanh Ha litchi has distinct characteristics. The litchi has a thin skin, bright red when ripe, small seeds, thick flesh, fragrant, sweet and cool when eaten, without feeling sour or astringent after eating.
Thanh Ha litchi is not only different thanks to the natural advantages but also because of the meticulous and careful care of the growers. Immediately after harvesting, litchi growers prune the branches, shape the canopy, and apply organic fertilizer. In January, the process of flowering and fruiting is carried out scientifically, combining long-term experience and technical advances.
Ms. Mac Thi Huong in village 3, Thanh Tan commune said: “The most difficult thing in taking care of lychees is maintaining a uniform flowering and fruiting rate. Temperature, humidity, and even light intensity also affect the quality of the fruit. We have to monitor every day, every stage to have appropriate adjustments and interventions.”
This year, the lychee crop was good, so Mrs. Huong's family harvested more than 7 tons of lychee. Due to the correct application of VietGAP process in production, all of Mrs. Huong's lychees met the standards and were purchased by Red Dragon Production, Trade and Service Company Limited.

Thanh Ha farmers do not overuse pesticides. Thanks to this, lychees are not only delicious but also clean, ensuring food safety, meeting GlobalGAP standards, a prerequisite for exporting to demanding markets.
Affirming brand through reputation and market

According to data from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thanh Ha district, in 2025, the whole district will have about 3,300 hectares of lychee, yielding 38,000 tons, exporting more than 50%. The whole district has 167 lychee growing area codes for export, of which 48 codes are exported to China, 39 codes are exported to Australia, 34 codes are exported to Japan, 38 codes are exported to the US and 8 codes are exported to Thailand. The entire lychee area applies the VietGAP process to production. Currently, 500 hectares of lychee have been recognized as meeting VietGAP standards, 115 hectares meeting GlobalGAP standards.
Mr. Mai Xuan Thin, General Director of Red Dragon Production, Trade and Service Company Limited said: “What makes Thanh Ha litchi brand is not only the quality of the product but also the long-standing reputation. When mentioning Thanh Ha litchi, domestic and international traders all know that this is a type of litchi that you will remember forever after eating it once. That is also our choice when exporting Thanh Ha litchi and we have received very good feedback from international friends”.
Mr. Thin added that in the Japanese market, Thanh Ha lychees are carefully packaged and preserved using deep freezing technology. Although the retail price in Japan can reach up to 500,000 VND/kg, they are still always out of stock during peak days.
However, facing the challenges of climate change and competition from other growing regions, maintaining quality, a core element to maintain a brand, is not easy.

Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy Ha, Permanent Vice Chairwoman of Thanh Ha District People's Committee, said that the district has focused on directing lychee growing communes to actively promote production linkages according to the value chain, ensuring transparent traceability of origin, and expanding local consumption markets to increase the value of agricultural products. Along with improving the quality of lychees, each person needs to be deeply aware of preserving and promoting the strengths of the lychee tree's ancestral land.
Up to now, Thanh Ha litchi has been certified as a "geographical indication" and many other prestigious titles such as: "Top 10 prestigious and quality products" and a specialty "Quintessence of specialties of 3 regions", "Golden Brand" award, "Trusted and safe food brand" certificate, top 10 famous brands voted by the Vietnam Association of Science and Entrepreneurs, Intellectual Property and Creativity Magazine.
In October 2024, Thanh Ha litchi was certified as the Golden Brand of Vietnamese Agriculture by the Vietnam General Association of Agriculture and Rural Development.
