In a recent interview, Sam Altman made a shocking statement.
“At some point, ChatGPT will have more conversations than all the words humans speak to each other combined. I think it’s unreasonable to expect a single model to have a personality or style that will cover all of them,” OpenAI CEO said at a dinner with journalists in San Francisco (USA).
The comments come after the controversial launch of GPT-5, a large language model that was introduced with great fanfare but was criticized by users for its unfriendly personality. Immediately after the announcement, OpenAI stopped providing access to previous models, including GPT-4o.
Faced with a series of criticisms from users, OpenAI "turned around", providing the GPT-4o version again alongside the 3 variants of GPT-5. However, in this exchange, Sam Altman still mentioned the initial success of GPT-5, including positive reviews of the research capabilities of the new model from scientists and traffic via API doubling within 48 hours.
ChatGPT launched relatively quietly in November 2022 before becoming the fastest growing technology product in history. The chatbot's incredible ability to simulate communication and problem-solving has raised hopes of creating machines as intelligent as humans.
Altman, however, admitted that there was a mistake with the latest release. The OpenAI team didn’t realize how changing the model’s tone would affect users. He noted that ChatGPT will have more customizations in the near future.
“There will need to be a wide variety of products to cater to the huge diversity of use cases and people,” the CEO said.
