On social media X, Munich police said they shot a suspicious individual in the Karolinenplatz area near the Israeli Consulate in Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria, early on September 5. The suspect was injured and there was no indication of any other suspects or incidents.

About an hour after arriving at the initial scene, police said they saw the person who appeared to be carrying a gun. The police statement did not specify whether the person was male or female.

The incident occurred on the anniversary of the 1972 attack at the Munich Olympics, in which Palestinian gunmen killed 11 Israeli athletes.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said she did not want to speculate too quickly but described it as a "serious incident". She thanked Munich police for their quick response and told reporters that "protecting Jewish and Israeli institutions is a top priority".

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the Munich consulate was closed at the time because of a memorial service for the attack on Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. No staff were injured in the incident.

Germany, like many other European countries, has been on alert for potential security risks around Israeli facilities amid the conflict in Gaza and rising tensions in the Middle East.
