People need to be vigilant against this new and sophisticated scam.

Accordingly, call merging is a phone feature that allows users to connect multiple calls into a group call, which is very useful for remote meetings or when users want to chat with many people at the same time. However, this feature is being exploited by criminals to commit fraud and steal assets. This form of fraud is very sophisticated, as long as the victim accepts the merged call, the subjects can legally obtain the OTP code to conduct illegal transactions.

Specifically, the scammer will call directly, claiming to have the victim's phone number from an acquaintance; then give a reason to request to merge the calls. The merged call is actually a call from the bank to provide the OTP code.

When participating in a unified call, the subjects can easily get the OTP code. Before that, the subjects already had the victim's account information, just waiting for the OTP code to complete the transaction and appropriate the money.

The above scam can be easily identified through some signs such as: The caller is a strange number but claims to know the victim's relatives; citing work reasons or needing to talk together, forcing the call to be merged; creating a sense of trust by knowing the victim's list of friends from social networks.

To protect themselves, authorities recommend that people absolutely do not merge calls with people whose identity is not clearly verified, do not share OTP codes in any form, and do not follow instructions from strangers calling.

At the same time, increase the use of spam/fraud detection applications such as: nTrust, Truecaller, Call Blacklist... When suspecting fraud, people should contact the nearest bank, police or authorities.
