Affirming the position of key fruit trees in the Mekong Delta region

The workshop was attended by leaders of Can Tho City, scientists from institutes, schools, businesses and more than 300 delegates who are members of cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmer groups in Can Tho.

According to the report, over the years, durian has affirmed its position as one of the main fruit crops of the Mekong Delta region, bringing high income to thousands of farming households. In particular, since the Chinese market opened its doors to official imports of Vietnamese durian, export turnover has grown rapidly, making durian a bright spot in our country's agricultural sector.

In Can Tho , in recent years, durian trees have been developed and invested in with a total area of nearly 13,000 hectares, ranking third among the city's fruit trees, after jackfruit and banana. Currently, more than 86% of Ri6 durian varieties are grown in gardens.

Most of the durian output in Can Tho is consumed through the purchasing system of local traders by purchasing at each household's garden. In addition, some collective economic organizations and farming households have initially linked up to consume and supply fruit to retail establishments in the city center, or consumed through the form of garden ecotourism.

Currently, 85 cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmer groups have been established in the area with an area of 1,900 hectares. In addition, there are 10 companies that link consumption with cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmer groups in communes and wards of Can Tho to produce durian for export to China, with a total area of nearly 840 hectares. Durian trees have brought annual profits to Can Tho farmers from 200-250 million VND/year/ha.

However, durian growers are facing many difficulties and challenges. Chinese consumers are increasingly demanding in terms of quality, plant quarantine and food safety.

The above situation requires farmers, the agricultural export business community, and even the authorities to fully and strictly comply with regulations and standards from partner markets; to reorganize production well, associated with standardizing production processes; to establish growing area codes, packaging facility codes, and traceability to ensure product quality management from the source...

Building a long-term development strategy for the durian industry

At the workshop, experienced scientists and experts from the School of Agriculture (Can Tho University) and research units provided farmers, cooperatives and businesses with official scientific information, from the causes of cadmium residue in soil, water and farming processes, to solutions for safe use of fertilizers and pesticides and especially practical recommendations to meet the requirements of the import market...

Thereby contributing to solving immediate difficulties, aiming to build a long-term development strategy for the durian industry in Can Tho in particular and Vietnam in general.

Regarding the issuance and management of growing area codes, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City said: Can Tho currently has 579 growing area codes that have been issued; the total area granted growing area codes is 9,384 hectares, with the number of households participating in the growing area being 8,221 households.

In the first 7 months of 2025, the total number of codes granted was 79, with a total area of 1,456 hectares, the number of participating households was 1,096 hectares; for packaging facility codes granted to date is 25 codes; the number of participating facilities is 16 facilities.

Regarding consumption linkage, most of the durian output in the city is consumed through the purchasing system of local traders by purchasing at each household's garden. In addition, a number of collective economic organizations and farming households have initially implemented consumption linkages, supplying fruits to retail establishments in the city center, or consuming through garden ecotourism. Currently, 85 cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmer groups have been formed in the area with an area of 1,901 hectares.

Regarding solutions to develop the durian industry to achieve export quality in Can Tho, experts, scientists and businesses said that it is necessary to organize durian production according to the orientation of scale and location; minimize spontaneous development, especially in areas with unsuitable climate, land and irrigation conditions.

Monitor and grasp information about crop season, yield of growing areas, purchasing enterprises; manage growing areas to ensure compliance with regulations, procedures, and meet the requirements of import markets.

Conduct annual periodic monitoring of growing areas that have been granted codes, especially factors that importing countries are interested in; strengthen inspection, examination and supervision of growing areas and packaging facilities to control the quality of exported durian right from the input and cultivation stages; promptly detect and handle cases of violations and fraud in the use of codes for growing areas and export packaging facilities; resolutely suspend or revoke fraudulent and violating codes.

At the same time, support product linkage with enterprises by encouraging cooperatives, cooperative groups and enterprises to form production, supply and consumption chains, creating high added value and ensuring product quality.

Support cooperatives and cooperative groups to participate in trade promotion activities, market connection, product promotion, and brand building; enhance the role of Associations in connecting farmers and businesses to help them access information, markets, and technology.
