The Vietnamese women's team was once in the top 4 of the 2023 Asian Championship, was one of the 4 strongest women's teams at the 19th ASIAD and won the AVC Challenge Cup/AVC Nations Cup for 3 consecutive years. This year, participating for the first time in the World Volleyball Championship, taking place from August 22 to September 7 in Thailand, the Vietnamese women's team was placed in Group G with extremely strong opponents, including: Poland, Germany and Kenya.
If the Polish women's team is ranked 3rd in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) rankings, Germany is ranked 11th. Meanwhile, Kenya is ranked just one place behind the Vietnamese team, at 23rd in the world.
Vietnam has made significant progress in the past 2 years but it seems that it is still not comparable to its opponents. With the possession of the best strikers in Europe and the world today (Magdalena Stysiak, Aleksandra Gryka, Karolina Drukowska ...), Poland is considered the strongest in the group, even a strong candidate for the championship. Germany has a stable and balanced force, recently defeating Thailand 3-0 at the Volleyball Nations League 2025.

Kenya is no stranger to the Vietnamese women’s team. The African team won a friendly match two years ago when the Vietnamese team went to France to participate in the FIVB Challenge Cup. In addition, Kenya will also have a friendly match with the Vietnamese team in Hanoi on August 19 before both teams fly to Thailand to participate in the world tournament.
Many fans were concerned when the host country Thailand proposed that FIVB conduct gender testing at this tournament - the target seemed to be Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, the player that Thai fans have been threatening recently. The coaching staff of the national team and the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) showed great confidence in the team's strength, registering all 14 members who have participated in major tournaments since the beginning of the year such as the AVC Nations Cup 2025, VTV Cup and SEA V.League 2025. If nothing changes at the last minute, this will also be the official squad of the Vietnamese team competing at the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year, also held in Thailand.
The gender of athletes has been a hot topic all week, especially after FIVB determined that the U21 Vietnam team had an ineligible player. As a result, FIVB ruled that the U21 Vietnam team lost 0-3 in all 4 matches, pushing the team down to the 17th-24th place group instead of being in the top 16 teams of the tournament.
Fans are still waiting for VFV's direction in proving the honesty and integrity of the U21 team, restoring the reputation of Vietnamese women's volleyball.
The Vietnamese women's volleyball team does not focus on performance in their first participation in the world arena. The team considers the tour in Thailand as an opportunity to learn and gain more experience to best prepare for the 33rd SEA Games later this year.
