Coach Kim Pan-gon (55 years old) has led the Malaysian national team since 2022. In July 2024, Mr. Kim suddenly asked to terminate his contract with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and then moved to lead Ulsan Huyndai Club in Korea. On February 12, Mr. Kim and Ulsan Huyndai lost 1-2 to Thai club Buriram United in the 2024-2025 AFC Champions League Elite.

With a record of 1 win, 6 losses and only 3 points, Ulsan Hyundai ranked 11th in the Eastern Conference standings and was officially eliminated, regardless of the results of the remaining matches. The three-time K-League 1 champion fell to the bottom of the rankings after a series of 5 consecutive losses and had no chance of advancing after their 6th loss in the AFC Champions League Elite.

After the loss, Ulsan Hyundai coach Kim Pan-gon said: "We have one more match, but our journey in the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) has come to an end. First of all, I would like to apologize to the fans. We need to prepare for the next ACLE with a stronger squad and better form. This time the result was not as expected, but we will not be discouraged and continue to prepare for the next tournament."

In the match against the Thai representative, the Korean team received 2 goals in the 20th and 90+3 minutes. Jang Si-young scored the only goal for Ulsan Huyndai at the end of the first half.

Coach Kim commented on the match: "Many young players have been tested. This is definitely a valuable experience for them. We will continue to prepare better."

The Korean coach emphasized : "We are going through a tight schedule with 4 matches in 10 days, this affects the preparation strategy for this match. Hopefully the fans are not too disappointed."

The former Malaysia coach added: "We still have K-League and ACLE next season. I apologize for not being able to deliver better results, but I hope everyone understands. If we strengthen the squad, I believe we will do better in the next ACLE. I will try my best to deliver good performances right from the start of the new season."
