On July 7, several leading medical organizations in the US filed a lawsuit against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., accusing him of "endangering public health" regarding new recommendations for the COVID-19 vaccine.
In late May, Secretary Kennedy announced on social media that the federal government will no longer recommend COVID-19 vaccination for children and pregnant women, an announcement that was met with strong opposition from health experts.
In the lawsuit, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Physicians (ACP) and several other prestigious medical organizations called on the court to overturn Secretary Kennedy's "unilateral and unscientific " directive and bring the COVID-19 vaccine back into the vaccination program.
One of the accusations, pediatrician Tina Tan, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, said Secretary Kennedy “deprived parents of the choice to protect their children through vaccination.”
The complaint was filed in the northeastern state of Massachusetts. Federal health officials have not yet responded to the complaint.
Since taking office in February under President Donald Trump, Kennedy has been pushed to overhaul US vaccination policies.
Last June, he fired all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), then appointed new members of his own choosing with the slogan "Make America Healthy Again"./.
