Belgium has marked a major milestone in its military modernization with the rollout of the first Griffon 6×6 Véhicule Blindé Multi-Rôle (VBMR) heavy multi-role armoured vehicle at a local facility in Mol, Staden, West Flanders.

Belgian Minister of Defense and Foreign Trade, Theo Francken, confirmed at a press conference that the first batch of these vehicles is expected to be delivered to military units by the end of 2025, strategically replacing the aging Dingo armored vehicle fleet.

The Mol assembly operation handles the final stages of vehicle preparation, including the installation of state-of-the-art equipment, comprehensive testing and finishing operations such as paintwork. During the production period from 2025 to 2031, the plant is expected to build 380 Griffons, with an output of around ten units per month.

Francken stressed that the Griffon will significantly enhance the combat effectiveness of the Belgian Armed Forces, providing superior mobility and rapid response on the battlefield.

Key features of the vehicle include: Integrated smoke exhaust system: Enhances concealment and protection. Modular weapons system: Ensures adaptability to a variety of missions. The versatility of the Griffon's basic design is remarkable as it is produced in a variety of configurations, including variants for infantry, medical evacuation, command and control, and artillery support.

Advanced protection and connectivity Developed by the French SCORPION consortium – comprising KNDS, Arquus and Thales – the Griffon is designed to counter ballistic threats, mines and improvised explosive devices. The vehicle is equipped with the SCORPION Combat Information System (SICS), which enables real-time digital connectivity, a key element in modern warfare.

The Griffon VBMR armoured vehicle is part of the Franco-Belgian Capacité Motorisée (CaMo) initiative, which also includes Belgium purchasing 60 Jaguar armoured reconnaissance vehicles. This cooperation underlines the commitment of both countries to enhance military interoperability and defence capabilities. Infrastructure development in Mol To accommodate the assembly of the Griffon, Mol has established a new 5,500 square metre workshop, equipped with an on-site test track.

Employees participating in this program underwent intensive training at the SCORPION production line in Roanne, France, contributing to the expertise being shared among Belgian colleagues.

With the introduction of the Griffon VBMR, Belgium is making significant strides in modernising its military fleet. The new asset not only promises enhanced operational capabilities but also demonstrates a broader strategic commitment to strengthening defence cooperation in Europe. The versatility of the Griffon makes it an essential asset for the Belgian Armed Forces as they face the complexities of contemporary military engagements.
