The "3 in 1" artist

To us, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc is both familiar and strange. Familiar because we have heard many songs performed by him posted on YouTube such as: Legend of Po Inư Nagar; Spring on the ancient tower; Sunlight tower; Legend of Po Sah Inư; Apsara dancer Cham... In particular, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc also composed a number of songs loved by audiences such as: Vuong van tinh que; Chieu thap; Ngot ngot loi me ru; Kate doi mong... What is strange is because during his 32 years of artistic activities, he was associated with the Cham Folk Art Troupe, later the Ninh Thuan Province Ethnic Song and Dance Troupe (old). Until today, when he and the Ninh Thuan Ethnic Song and Dance Troupe came under the common roof of the Traditional Arts Theater, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with this talented artist and singer.

At the age of 57, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc is one of the few veteran artists of the theater. Therefore, although he has only been practicing and performing with his colleagues for more than 3 weeks, he has received the affection of everyone. Learning about Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc, we feel his deep affection for traditional arts, especially the arts of the Cham and Raglai people. In the role of a singer, Dang Nang Duc's voice has contributed to bringing the unique sounds and melodies of songs about Cham villages, Cham people and homeland and country to audiences near and far. He has had long tours in the northern mountainous provinces, or in the Mekong Delta and even to India. His singing has also conquered audiences and judges in national music competitions. In 2007, after 14 years of singing, he was honored to be awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State.

Not only possessing a beautiful voice, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc is also a musician who can play many musical instruments, especially traditional musical instruments. “In 1993, when applying to work at the Cham Folk Art Troupe, the unit required that each singer, in addition to being able to sing, must also know how to play a musical instrument. At that time, I knew how to play the organ, so I was recruited. During my work, I also learned how to use some traditional musical instruments such as Ghinang drums and Paranung drums,” he said. From knowing how to use musical instruments to help add color to his singing performances, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc was able to perform traditional musical instruments proficiently. This helped the troupe to be more favorable in staging new performances to perform for the audience, participating in competitions and art performances.

Along with his role as a singer and musician, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc also spent 28 years working as a manager in the art units he previously worked for. As a member of the Vietnam Folk Arts Association and the Vietnam Ethnic Minorities Literature and Arts Association, in recent years, he has made many field trips to Cham and Raglai villages to record folk songs. From there, he researched and used Cham and Raglai folk materials to compose a number of new songs about his homeland that have been well received by audiences.

Desire to share traditional art with the younger generation

After merging art troupes into the Traditional Art Theater, in addition to participating in performances for the audience, Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc's wish is to share more with young singers and artists about traditional music and instruments. "In the new unit, there is still a priority for using traditional art performances in the performance program, including performances with Cham folk music and dance. Therefore, I feel that I can support singers and musicians in the process of practicing these performances better and bringing out the Cham character more clearly," Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc shared.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ai Quoc - Director of the Traditional Arts Theater, the unit currently has a relatively diverse staff in terms of age and performance types. The theater's development orientation is to prioritize traditional and ethnic art forms that are suitable for the needs and tastes of modern audiences. Therefore, the unit will try to exploit the knowledge, experience and abilities of veteran artists such as Meritorious Artist Dang Nang Duc to support and train young artists in traditional arts. Thereby, improving the ability of each artist to bring the audience quality performances.
