U23 Indonesia received great expectations to "pay back the debt" to U23 Vietnam in the final match of the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 tournament. However, they did not meet expectations, despite taking control of the match.
Commenting on the defeat of U23 Indonesia, Bola newspaper wrote: “Being silenced by U23 Vietnam, U23 Indonesia accepted defeat”. The leading Indonesian sports newspaper commented: “U23 Indonesia continues to suffer more pain when facing U23 Vietnam. Once again, Garuda Muda (the nickname of U23 Indonesia) missed the chance to win the U23 Southeast Asian Championship.
In this match, U23 Indonesia tried to actively attack and even had a chance to open the score when Jens Raven raised his head in the air at close range. In a tense match, U23 Vietnam scored the opening goal thanks to Cong Phuong after a shot in the penalty area.
In fact, U23 Indonesia controlled the match but the whole team lacked determination. That made them unable to penetrate the solid defense of U23 Vietnam. The away team mainly defended, only occasionally counterattacking. However, coach Kim Sang Sik's team was sharper.
Bola newspaper also analyzed the reasons for U23 Indonesia's failure, with three reasons: lack of sharpness in the final situation, monotonous play, lack of creativity and often making basic mistakes.

CNN Indonesia expressed regret: “U23 Indonesia could not win the U23 Southeast Asian Championship despite playing at home. This was a rather tense match when the two teams continuously clashed, especially at the end of the first half. U23 Vietnam had many provocative actions that made the U23 Indonesian players unable to control their anger.
U23 Vietnam won thanks to the only goal by Cong Phuong in the 37th minute. Meanwhile, U23 Indonesia attacked a lot but could not score.
The drama happened at the end of the second half when coach Kim Sang Sik acted unsportsmanlike by trying to stop Robi Darwis from throwing the ball. This action made assistant coach Damian Daniel van Rensburg of Indonesia U23 angry. He threw a can of mineral water onto the bench of Vietnam U23.
Suara newspaper commented: “The wound of U23 Indonesia has not healed yet as they continued to lose to U23 Vietnam in the final match of the U23 Southeast Asian tournament. Coach Gerald Vanenburg’s team could not take advantage of their home field advantage when facing U23 Vietnam. They continuously lost to U23 Vietnam in two consecutive final matches of the U23 Southeast Asian tournament.”
In another article, Suara newspaper said that VAR did not work in the situation where U23 Vietnam's center-back Ly Duc elbowed Rahmat Arjuna in the 32nd minute. The referee only gave a yellow card to the center-back wearing Hoang Anh Gia Lai's shirt and did not check VAR, despite the protests of the home team's players. If Ly Duc had been sent off in this match, U23 Indonesia would not have lost to U23 Vietnam.
After the Southeast Asian U23 tournament, Vietnam U23 will enter two important tournaments this year: the Asian U23 qualifying round in September and the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year.
