Bach Thuan (Vu Thu) is one of the top communes in the province in terms of pig herd development. However, the downside of livestock farming is environmental pollution. To ensure the health and living of the people, and at the same time exploit the green space advantage of the garden village, the commune aims to develop tourism to replace livestock farming.

Bach Thuan has gradually shifted from livestock farming to tourism development to create a green, clean, and beautiful environment and ecosystem in the garden village.

With many advantages considered to be "heavenly time, favorable terrain" to develop resort tourism and community tourism, Bach Thuan has been making efforts to build and develop the "smokeless industry" in the garden village. However, many difficulties arise when implementing tourism activities, the most urgent of which is handling the environmental pollution caused by pig farming. "My family has welcomed many groups to visit and experience. Most tourists are very interested in the green space, many unique cultural works, enjoying the local market's cakes and snacks... However, if the environmental pollution is not well handled, it will be very difficult for Bach Thuan to do tourism" - Mr. Nguyen Nhu Tuan, owner of a local ornamental garden shared.

The situation of dumping livestock waste causing environmental pollution has occurred for many years in Bach Thuan.

Mr. Nguyen Kim Sau, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bach Thuan Commune, said: An inspection of the commune's key livestock facilities showed that most households built barns on agricultural land without a livestock license, violated safety distances, exceeded the permitted livestock scale, and had no measures to treat livestock waste before discharging it into the environment. Most recently, in November 2023, the People's Committee of the commune organized propaganda and signed a commitment with pig farming households to ensure environmental sanitation; administratively sanctioned 12 livestock farming households for environmental protection violations. The commune will continue to propagate and remind households to take measures to treat waste such as building biogas tanks, wastewater tanks, using microorganisms to treat manure and wastewater, contributing to environmental protection. We have considered the option of relocating livestock farming households to areas far from residential areas, but due to the commune's unique terrain and soil characteristics, production land interspersed with residential land, it is impossible to plan a separate livestock farming area.

Ms. Pham Thi Nhu Phong, Chairman of Vu Thu District People's Committee, said: To develop sustainable tourism and attract tourists, Bach Thuan must have a clean environment. In the coming time, the district will have a plan to mobilize and find resources to support 100% of livestock households in Bach Thuan to convert their production model, from raising pigs to growing ornamental plants and fruit trees, both ensuring economic efficiency for the people and contributing to environmental protection. Regaining the clean environment of the old garden village not only contributes to ensuring the health of the people but is also a prerequisite for the locality to exploit its potential and strengths, develop tourism, and increase income for the people.
