Australia said on August 27 it would cap the number of international students it can enroll at 270,000 by 2025, as the government seeks to rein in record immigration that is contributing to rising rents.

The decision follows a series of moves since 2023 to end preferential treatment for international students and workers in Australia during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to SBS News, the cap will allow 145,000 places for public universities, 95,000 places for international students in vocationaleducation and training (VET) and 30,000 places at universities and other training institutions.

“There are now about 10 per cent more international students studying at universities than before the pandemic, while the number at private training and vocational institutions is about 50 per cent higher,” Australian Education Minister Jason Clare said at a press conference.

Education is one of Australia’s biggest foreign exchange earners, bringing in $24.7 billion to the economy in the 2022-23 financial year. However, polls show voters are concerned that the influx of foreign students and workers will put undue pressure on the housing market, making immigration one of the major contentious issues between candidates in the country’s election less than a year from now.
