Apple Inc.’s top artificial intelligence (AI) researcher in robotics has left the company to join Meta Platforms Inc., becoming part of a wave of AI brain drain from the iPhone maker.
Meta Robotics Studio confirmed on September 2 that Jian Zhang, a robotics researcher, has joined the social media company. Zhang heads a small Apple team of academics focused on automation technology and the role of AI in those products.
The group has undergone some personnel changes, with one of Mr. Zhang’s subordinates, Mr. Mario Srouji, leaving to run AI products at Archer Aviation Inc. in April.
The robotics team is part of Apple’s artificial intelligence and machine learning division, which is separate from the company’s robotics product development organization, which was moved into Apple’s hardware engineering division earlier this year.
Last week, three other Apple AI researchers, John Peebles, Nan Du, and Zhao Meng, also left the Apple Foundation Models group, Apple’s internal team that specializes in large language models, according to people familiar with the matter. Peebles and Du will join OpenAI, while Zhao will join Anthropic PBC.
Many of their colleagues had already moved to Meta, which had lured talent with eye-popping pay raises. Ruoming Pang, who ran Apple’s modeling group, left with a multi-year contract worth $200 million.
Apple Foundation Models has lost about 10 members, including its leader, in recent weeks. The group played a central role in creating the Apple Intelligence Platform, launched last year as part of the company’s effort to keep up with developments in the field of AI.
