From difficulty to determination to change

The period of 2020 - 2021 is a challenging time for the tourism industry in An Giang in particular and the whole country in general. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a serious decline in the number of visitors, many tourism businesses are on the brink of bankruptcy. However, in the face of difficulties, An Giang has turned challenges into motivation to look back, correctly assess the current situation and propose strategic directions. Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Khanh Hiep shared: "For An Giang tourism to take off, it cannot rely solely on what is available. There needs to be a strong change from thinking, working methods, to infrastructure investment and diversification of tourism products". This determination has been concretized by specific resolutions and action plans, with the synchronous participation of the entire political system and the business community.

One of the key solutions that An Giang is promoting is diversifying tourism products. Not only focusing on spiritual tourism that has created its brand (Sam Mountain, Ba Chua Xu Temple, Tay An Co Tu Pagoda, Cam Mountain...), An Giang also maximizes the advantages of natural resources and indigenous culture to create unique experiences that attract tourists, such as: cultural - historical and spiritual tourism; ecological tourism, river experiences; agricultural and rural tourism...

Although it has developed, spiritual tourism in An Giang is still constantly being upgraded and renewed, strengthening the connection of spiritual destinations with cultural and culinary experiences, creating an attractive value chain. In addition, with a dense river system, Tra Su cajuput forest and green islands, An Giang is strongly developing ecological tourism. Tourists can experience the river life in the West through boat tours to explore cajuput forests, visit Chau Doc raft village, or cycle around islands such as Cu Lao Gieng, Cu Lao Ong Chuong to learn about traditional crafts and enjoy local cuisine. Homestays are springing up more and more, bringing experiences close to nature and indigenous culture.

Towards sustainable development

To catch up with the wave of tourists, An Giang pays special attention to improving service quality and investing in tourism infrastructure. A series of projects to upgrade roads, hotel systems, restaurants, and entertainment areas are being implemented. The province focuses on training high-quality tourism human resources, from tour guides, hotel staff to those directly working in tourism in the community. The application of technology in tourism is promoted. Smart tourism applications, digital maps, websites and tourism fanpages of the province are constantly updated, providing useful information and helping tourists easily access services.

The strategy to promote and advertise tourism is implemented in a systematic and professional manner. The province actively participates in domestic and international tourism fairs, organizes major events to attract the attention of travel agencies and tourists. In particular, taking advantage of the power of digital media and social networks to promote the image of An Giang with beautiful films and attractive stories about people and culture is bringing high efficiency. The An Giang Culture - Tourism Week, the Ba Chua Xu Festival of Sam Mountain... are golden opportunities to promote tourism, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world. To aim for sustainable development, the An Giang tourism industry also focuses on and performs well the work of preserving cultural values, protecting the environment and improving the lives of local people.

“The An Giang tourism industry is well aware that, to develop sustainable tourism, regional connectivity is needed. The province proactively cooperates with provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region and Ho Chi Minh City to build inter-route tours, diversify products and optimize experiences for tourists. This connectivity helps An Giang expand its market, create a combined strength, and make the Mekong Delta an attractive destination on the Vietnam tourism map,” said Nguyen Khanh Hiep, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Tourists coming to An Giang expressed their excitement and deep impression of the unique beauty of the land and people here. “An Giang is so beautiful, with rivers and majestic mountains. Most importantly, I love the peaceful feeling when looking at the vast rice fields of this rice granary of the West” - Ms. Nguyen Phi Phuong (tourist from Ho Chi Minh City) shared. “Not only is the scenery beautiful, An Giang cuisine is also wonderful, especially the rustic dishes with the rich flavor of the river delta of the West. The hospitality and friendliness of the local people is also a big plus, making tourists feel welcome and want to return to An Giang many times” - Mr. Thai Van Tam (tourist from Binh Thuan province) commented.

With synchronous, drastic solutions and long-term vision, An Giang tourism is really changing. From initial difficulties, An Giang has been growing strongly, becoming a bright spot on the Vietnam tourism map, promising to awaken the great potential of a sunny and windy border region but no less charming. Certainly, in the near future, An Giang will be a name mentioned more and more in the journey to discover the hidden beauty of the country.
