In the 80-year journey of gaining independence and building the country, Vietnam has turned the impossible into possible by always overcoming every difficult moment of the country.

This was shared by Mr. Clement Ngu, Nikkei Asia correspondent in the UK, in a recent interview with VNA correspondent in the UK on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

Citing the above statement, Mr. Clement pointed out the success of the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism, the determination and efforts to bring the country out of poverty after the war, as well as Vietnam's successes in the international arena.

Regarding specific socio -economic achievements, Mr. Clement pointed out that since the Doi Moi policy in 1986, Vietnam's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased 100 times and GDP per capita has increased more than 6 times, from under 700 USD to nearly 4,500 USD in 2023.

Vietnam has also achieved impressive poverty reduction, with the poverty rate falling from around 58% in the early 1990s to below 5% in 2020.

Vietnam also reached an impressive milestone in the late 1980s when it transformed from a food importer into a major agricultural exporter thanks to Resolution 10 on agricultural management innovation (Contract 10), paving the way for agricultural development, eliminating bureaucratic centralization and granting farmers autonomy in production.

In the 2000s, a wave of state-owned enterprise reform and encouragement of private economic development made the private sector an important driver of job creation and innovation.

Mr. Clement said that over the past 80 years, Vietnam has been developing steadily, recording continuous economic growth in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. This growth has continued to this day. The Vietnamese government has set a target of GDP growth of more than 8% this year and double-digit growth next year.

In terms of foreign affairs, Vietnam has also achieved remarkable achievements with the motto of being friends with all countries. Mr. Clement affirmed that Vietnam is an active member of the international community, always open to cooperation and plays an active role in the international peace process.

He cited Vietnam overcoming past stories to build relations with the US, or Hanoi being the venue for the US-North Korea summit in 2019, as well as Vietnam recently hosting leaders from China, Russia and the US in just nine months.

The main reason, according to Mr. Clement, is Vietnam's unique position and strength - a country with the ingenuity and ability to cooperate with many countries, including competing powers.

He said these achievements were the result of a multilateral foreign policy, whereby Vietnam asserted itself in an era of competition between great powers, turning this competition into benefits for Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's economic achievements demonstrate the openness of the Vietnamese people as well as of leaders at both central and local levels.

It is openness to trade and private enterprise where central leadership – in the spirit of entrepreneurship – is willing to take risks, allow and support the development of the private sector, and apply mechanisms to attract international investors.

Mr. Clement commented that the goal of becoming a developed, high-income country by 2045 is ambitious, but Vietnam - with a stable political system, is doing everything and is on track to achieve this goal, by identifying a number of key areas to drive growth such as the semiconductor industry and international finance, as well as implementing major resolutions on institutional reform, science and technology development, international integration and especially Resolution 68-NQ/TW of the Politburo on private economic development./.
