On the afternoon of February 22, the Ministry of National Defense organized the handover of the President's decision to four officers to carry out United Nations peacekeeping missions in the Central African Republic, the Republic of South Sudan and the Abyei region (Africa).
According to the decision, the four officers who will carry out this mission include: Lieutenant Colonel Ly Thanh Tam (Vietnam Peacekeeping Department) who will take on the position of military observer, commander of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Force, and head of the working group at the UNMISS mission, Republic of South Sudan.
Major Luc Thai Ha (Coast Guard Command) holds the position of intelligence analyst at the MINUSCA mission division, Central African Republic.
Captain Vu Quang Khai (Coast Guard Command) and Captain Nguyen Tien Thanh (Navy) both serve as military observers at the UNISFA mission in the Abyei region.
Colonel Pham Manh Thang - Director of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department (Ministry of National Defense) - said that so far, the preparation work for the deployment of the officers has been basically completed. All four officers have received approval letters from the United Nations and are assured of their work, have determined their tasks well, and are ready to deploy to the mission to carry out their assigned tasks.
Among the four officers assigned to this mission, Lieutenant Colonel Ly Thanh Tam has experience participating in UN peacekeeping operations in 2020 as a military observer. Therefore, he has many favorable conditions and a good grasp of the local situation to perform well his duties and responsibilities as a force commander and working group leader.

At the decision-making ceremony, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien - Deputy Minister of National Defense, Head of the interdisciplinary working group, Head of the Ministry of National Defense's Steering Committee on Vietnam's participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations - emphasized that this is the first deployment of the Vietnam People's Army to participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations in the new year of Giap Thin 2024.
The General assigned the officers to prepare for the trip and requested them to prepare their luggage well, clearly define their responsibilities, and ensure security and safety. Upon arrival at the mission, they must quickly receive the handover and focus on performing their duties and tasks, grasp the relevant situation, and coordinate well with local forces.
At the same time, promote the spirit of internal solidarity, strictly comply with the command and direction of the mission, ensure strict discipline of the Vietnam People's Army and spread the beautiful image of Uncle Ho's soldiers.
Up to now, Vietnam has sent 792 officers and professional soldiers to deploy individually and in units.
