Meta said it removed about 10 million fake accounts on Facebook in the first half of 2025. The information was announced in the company's official blog post on July 14, as part of an effort to clean up the platform from inauthentic content and spam.
According to Meta, the deleted accounts mostly impersonated popular content creators, using their images and reputations to spread unauthentic content. This is part of the company's strategy to increase the credibility and originality of the content displayed on the News Feed.
Along with deleting accounts, the tech giant also implemented additional measures to tighten content management, including prioritizing original posts from real creators and limiting the spread of content deemed “spammy.” About 500,000 other accounts identified as having inauthentic behavior were also dealt with through reduced visibility or limited monetization from the platform.
Meta defines unoriginal content as images or videos that are reused without clear attribution. The company has now implemented a system to detect duplicate videos and automatically restrict their distribution.
Meta’s campaign to combat fake content comes alongside a major investment in artificial intelligence (AI). On July 14, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would spend “hundreds of billions of dollars” on infrastructure, with the goal of having Meta’s first super AI up and running by 2026.
As AI makes mass content production increasingly easier, social media platforms are facing a wave of “AI junk” content, including repetitive, uncreative videos, images, or posts.
Not only Meta, YouTube has also announced a new policy to tighten the monetization of non-original content. Accordingly, mass-produced or repetitive videos will no longer be eligible to participate in the revenue sharing program. Despite the controversy, YouTube affirms that it still welcomes creators to use AI to improve the quality of content, as long as it is creative and different.
YouTube's new policy takes effect on July 15.
