Park Kwang Su - President of Busan International Film Festival, who laid the foundation to help Busan become the "cinema mecca" of Asia, will also attend DANAFF III.
Works screened in the Korean Cinema Spotlight Program, DAFF III.
Over the past 20 years, audiences and filmmakers in Vietnam as well as around the world have increasingly admired Korean cinema, both popular films and top-notch works. In addition to Korean films dominating markets across continents - from the big screen in cinemas to the small screen in homes and digital platforms, top-notch works of Korean cinema have also appeared continuously, diversely, and successfully at many prestigious international film festivals.
In particular, the brilliant success of the film "Parasite" (directed by Bong Joon Ho) in 2019 with the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the four most important Oscars (Best Film, Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film) further affirmed the prominent position of Korean cinema.
In the Korean Cinema Spotlight Program, the Organizing Committee selected and screened 11 typical films produced from the 60s of the last century to the present, along with 3 films by the "veteran" Korean filmmaker Im Kwon Taek to illustrate each period: Overcoming difficulties, rising up, seizing opportunities, systematically building internal strength to achieve success of Korean cinema.
Audiences can see the traditional cultural colors in the interaction with Western culture in the films of the 60s and 70s; the innovation towards openness and democracy in the films of the 80s; the "Hallyu" wave from the late 90s to the present with films that are strongly Korean in identity but have a global value, making the Korean film industry strong. Meanwhile, audiences will also admire 3 classic works (Seopyeonje, Chunhyang and Chihwaseon - Painted Fire) by master director Im Kwon Taek - one of the directors who laid the foundation for the success of Korean cinema.
Park Kwang Su - President of Busan International Film Festival will attend DANAFF III.
According to the Organizing Committee of DANAFF III, although it is not possible to include all the historical milestones, unique features, and evidence for the success of Korean cinema in this year's focus films, each Vietnamese and international filmmaker, researcher/critic, or each audience will have their own interesting experience to contemplate Korean cinema at DANAFF III. In particular, if we compare the more or less similarities in themes and expressive language of Korean and Vietnamese films in the 60s, we will see even more the strong rise of Korean cinema in the past few decades. The lessons learned from Korea for Asian and Vietnamese cinema are truly useful and valuable.
Films in the Korean Cinema Spotlight Program will be shown at Le Do, CGV, Galaxy, and Lotte Da Nang cinemas from June 30 in Da Nang City. Tickets will be distributed free of charge to audiences at Le Do cinema from June 24.
DANAFF III with the theme “Asian Bridge” will take place in Da Nang City from June 29 to July 5 with many attractive art activities in both scale and professional quality, many special exchange activities of Vietnamese and regional cinema. More than 100 films are selected for the programs in DANAFF III, including the Korean Cinema Spotlight Program.
