All four students from the Vietnamese national team competing in the 2025 International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held in the Republic of the Philippines, won prizes, including 1 Gold medal, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal.

This is the information just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training tonight, July 26.

The Gold Medal winner was Nguyen Luong Thai Duy, an 11th grade student at Hanoi -Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Hanoi . Duy ranked 7th out of 298 contestants.

The students who won the Silver medals were Nguyen Huu Thanh (grade 12 student, Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, Hai Phong City) and Bui Hoang Dai Duong (grade 12 student, Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, Hue City).

Le Hoang Kieu Anh, a 12th grade student at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Hanoi, won the Bronze medal.

With this achievement, the Vietnamese team is among the top 10 countries with the highest total points, contributing to continuing the impressive series of results at the International Olympic competitions in 2025 in particular and in recent years in general.

The 36th International Biology Olympiad was held in the Philippines from July 19 to 27 with the participation of 81 delegations from 81 countries and territories (including 3 observer delegations) and 298 contestants.

The exam consisted of two official days: one day of theory with two tests, each 180 minutes long, and one day of practical testing with four labs, each 90 minutes long. In reality, due to the extra time to prepare specimens and equipment, the candidates took the practical test continuously for 12 hours, from 12:30 on July 22 to 00:03 on July 23.

The two theoretical exams have 85 questions, with topics revolving around practical global issues such as environmental pollution, green growth, carbon neutrality, combating climate change, community disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment of some basic diseases according to the principles of precision medicine.

Four practical exam rooms cover biomedical science, molecular and cellular biology, ecology and systematics, and microbiology.

The biomedical section requires competencies in interpreting electrocardiograms, blood and urine biochemistry tests, interpreting X-ray images, measuring and selecting antibiotics for common pathological cases;

Molecular and cellular biology requires the ability to analyze genes, proteins, and measure the activity of molecules in cells to identify and predict the evolution of parasitic pathogens.

Ecology and systematics require anatomical and taxonomic skills to serve identification, monitoring, and development of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

The microbiology section requires skills in classifying and studying the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause food poisoning in humans.

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is often considered the leading comprehensive international competition in high school natural sciences worldwide, requiring comprehensive knowledge of Mathematics - Physics - Chemistry - Biology - Environment, along with basic laboratory skills, ranging from the molecular, organismal to the ecosystem and biosphere levels.

The Ministry of Education and Training believes that the results of this year's International Biology Olympiad continue to affirm the quality of general education, as well as the right direction in discovering and nurturing gifted students and integrating training programs and evaluating excellent students according to international standards./.

Vietnam participated in the International Biology Olympiad for the first time in 1996. The best achievements of the Vietnamese delegation were in 2018 and 2024 with 3 Gold medals and one Silver medal.
