Fabric painting - Tran Thanh Thuc's method of artistic expression

On July 26, in the contemporary exhibition space of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, artist Tran Thanh Thuc shared about the fate that brought her to fabric painting. It was a journey of more than 40 years of dedication.

Artist Tran Thanh Thuc shared that her first pieces of fabric appeared by chance when she was in her twenties. At that time, during a chance visit to her tailor friend’s house during the summer vacation, she had the opportunity to interact and casually try to piece together scattered pieces of fabric.

"The colorful scraps of fabric left over from the clothes my friend sewed for customers attracted me at first sight," artist Tran Thanh Thuc confided.

Artist Tran Thanh Thuc was born in 1960 in Nam Dinh province (old), now Ninh Binh province. She is one of the pioneers of fabric painting and has been involved in this genre for over 40 years.

Passionate about fabrics, the joy of the female artist is to successfully "transform" seemingly disparate pieces of fabric into unique works of art that are well received by the public.

According to artist Tran Thanh Thuc, in an artistic career, when an artist chooses a material to stick with and pursue, he must accept both the advantages and difficulties, even the challenges that that material brings.

Normally, to create color in a painting, lacquer and oil painters will use a palette. However, with fabric paintings, a completely different approach is needed. Artist Tran Thanh Thuc often “mixes colors” for fabric using the layering technique. By pasting independent pieces of fabric on top of each other, she will obtain a new color.

In many of Tran Thanh Thuc’s works, the fabric is layered up to 4-5 times. This combination is intended to create a visual effect, giving depth to the painting. Through different shades of light and dark, the space in the work seems more open and realistic.
