After some additional testing and delays, The Verge , citing OpenAI internal sources, revealed that the GPT-5 model is now expected to launch as early as next August.
The model is also “similar to an o3 mini,” complete with inference capabilities, according to the source. GPT-5 will also be the first time OpenAI has released an open weighting model since GPT-2 in 2019. The new model will be publicly released on Azure, Hugging Face, and other major cloud providers.
After GPT-4.5, OpenAI aims to unify the O-series and GPT-series models by creating a system that can use all of the company's tools, knows when to think long-term and when not, and is capable of handling a diverse set of tasks well, according to The Verge.
With ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API, the company plans to launch GPT-5 as a system that integrates multiple technologies, including o3. This means that OpenAI will no longer release o3 as a standalone model. OpenAI first revealed the o3 model in December 2024, and the o3-mini version was released in January of this year.
As for users, CEO Sam Altman revealed that when GPT-5 is released, free users of ChatGPT will have access to unlimited chat at a "standard intelligence level." Plus users will have access to GPT-5 at a "higher intelligence level." And Pro subscribers will have access to an "even higher intelligence level."
