Why are you taller in the morning than in the afternoon?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/05/2023

Dr. Ankit Batra, orthopedic surgeon, Sharda Hospital (India) said: "It is true that most people are slightly taller in the morning than in the evening. The reason is the effect of gravity on the human spine throughout the day," according to Indian Express (India) .

According to Dr. Batra, when standing upright, gravity compresses the discs in the spine, causing height to decrease. decreases by a small amount. As you move and bear weight during the day, this compression gradually increases and by the end of the day, your height will have decreased a little.

A person's height may be different when measured in the morning and afternoon.

In simple terms, during daily activities, such as standing, sitting and walking, the spine is compressed due to the force of gravity acting on the body. This compression can cause the spine to lose some of its height, said Dr. J. Harikishan, a senior general practitioner at Kamineni Hospital, Hyderabad (India).

Furthermore, during the day, the discs are compressed due to weight-bearing activities. As a result, they lose water content and become more "deflated", contributing to a loss of height.

However, when we sleep, our body lies horizontally, giving the discs a chance to rehydrate and return to their normal height, making us a little taller when we wake up.

The discs inside the spine are compressed, causing height to decrease gradually at the end of the day.

Suppose a person's actual height is 170 cm. When waking up in the morning, it can be measured at around 170.5 cm or even up to 171 cm. During daily activities, the spine is compressed and the height gradually decreases. At the end of the day, the height is only around 169.5 cm or even lower.

Dr. Harikishan calls it “normal to experience small changes in height throughout the day.”

“Notably, this change in height is usually small, around 0.5 to 1 cm, and can vary from person to person,” said Dr Batra, according to the Indian Express .
