Why did Vietnamese women's volleyball team not get extra points even though they defeated Thailand?

(Dan Tri) - Despite the historic victory over Thailand, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team did not receive any points in the rankings of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).

On the evening of August 10, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team defeated Thailand 3-2 in the second round of the SEA V-League (Southeast Asian volleyball tournament) at Ninh Binh Stadium. This is a historic victory for Vietnamese women's volleyball. For the first time, we defeated Thailand after 40 consecutive losses. In addition, Coach Tuan Kiet and his team also won the SEA V-League for the first time.

However, in the world rankings, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team did not receive any points despite winning against Thailand. The reason is because FIVB regulations stipulate that Thailand will not be counted for points in regional tournaments after participating in the Nations League world championship.

Therefore, whether we win or lose to this opponent, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will not be awarded or deducted points. In fact, after the defeat against Thailand in the first round of SEA V-League 2025, we did not lose any points.

The Nations League is an annual tournament that brings together 18 of the world's top women's volleyball teams. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian representative to participate in this tournament.

Although there was no change in points when meeting Thailand, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team received extra points in all four matches against Indonesia and the Philippines in the two SEA V-League stages this season (meeting each team twice). In the SEA V-League alone, Coach Tuan Kiet's team received an additional 14.58 points.

Thanks to that, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team has risen to 22nd place in the world with 155.79 points, 1 place lower than Thailand with 4.63 points less. This is our highest position in the world volleyball rankings.

It is worth mentioning that 3 years ago, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team was eliminated from the FIVB rankings because it did not participate in international tournaments. It was not until June 2023 that the team returned thanks to winning the AVC Challenge. At that point, the Vietnamese team had 62 points and ranked 49th. By August 2025, the Vietnamese team had increased by 93.79 points and 27 ranks.

In Asia alone, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team is ranked 4th, just behind China, Japan, Thailand and above Kazakhstan, South Korea and Chinese Taipei.

In the immediate future, Coach Tuan Kiet and his team will compete in two important tournaments: the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship (starting on August 22) and the 33rd SEA Games (December 2025). Both tournaments will be held in Thailand.
