We all experience stress at times. However, when stress is left unchecked, it can lead to serious mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

According to the health website Healthline (USA) , stress, anxiety and depression reduce the ability to concentrate, making it difficult for students to study and preventing adults from doing their best work.

Here are some ways to help relieve stress.

1. Get enough sleep

With a busy schedule of classes and activities, students often do not get enough sleep. Lack of sleep makes the body work less effectively, making it difficult to study.

Research shows that lack of sleep and daytime sleepiness are linked to poor mood, which makes learning less effective. Experts recommend getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

2. Exercise regularly

One of the healthiest ways to relax is to exercise regularly. One study found that college students who exercised regularly faced the same social, academic, and life pressures as their peers, but they felt less stressed, or were able to cope with stress more easily.

3. Take a deep breath

When your body is experiencing a stress response, it can be difficult to concentrate. You also tend to breathe incorrectly, taking short, shallow breaths. Improper breathing disrupts your body's metabolism. This can increase feelings of anxiety and fatigue.

One of the quickest ways to calm down is to practice breathing. Experts say that not only does it help the body calm down, breathing properly also helps us deal with long-term stress such as family relationships, friends, stress in studying, and exams.

4. Reduce screen time, increase conversation

Smartphones, laptops, and tablets are an integral part of many students’ daily lives. However, prolonged exposure to these devices can increase stress levels.

Several studies have shown that excessive smartphone use can increase stress levels and impair mental health. Furthermore, prolonged device use can negatively impact sleep, leading to increased stress.

Instead of screen time, young people should spend time talking to family and friends and participating in social activities. These activities can help reduce stress and increase happiness.
