Sharing with Thanh Nien on the morning of June 25, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hieu, Head of the Department of Agricultural and Food Preservation Technology, Institute of Agricultural Mechanics and Post-Harvest Technology, confirmed that the first batch of lychees exported to the US by sea after 25 days of transportation has been cleared through customs and put on sale in supermarkets in the state of Oregon.

Vietnamese lychees, after 25 days at sea, are now on sale in supermarkets in Oregon, USA.

According to Mr. Nguyen Manh Hieu, in order to meet the requirements of the US and some other markets in limiting the use of sulfur to treat and preserve exported fruits, the Institute of Agricultural Mechanics and Post-Harvest Technology has researched and developed the V-treat product. This product is produced entirely from food-grade organic acids and a processing and packaging process to extend the shelf life of fruits.

Aiming to export lychees by sea to the US, this year RYB Joint Stock Company and its partner Dragonberry (USA) invited experts from the Institute of Agricultural Mechanics and Post-Harvest Technology to coordinate with experts from Israel to test a container of Bac Giang lychees exported to the US.

"Israeli experts flew directly to the US to inspect and evaluate the quality of this shipment. Fresh lychees treated with V-treat after 25 days at sea still have the natural color and flavor closer to lychees freshly picked from the tree than other treatments proposed by Israeli and Vietnamese experts in this export trial," said Mr. Hieu.

According to Mr. Hieu, before packaging, lychees are dipped in a solution containing V-treat to extend the shelf life to 35 days while still maintaining their freshness. This preparation can completely replace sulfur in the processing of exported lychees. The cost of processing lychees with this preparation is about 1 million VND/ton.

"This success opens up a new direction in Vietnam's lychee export, helping businesses to transport large quantities by sea, with transportation costs many times cheaper than by air. However, to stably export lychees to the US market, it is necessary to have a packing house right in the growing area, and an irradiation facility right in Hanoi to help businesses reduce time and transportation costs," said Mr. Hieu.

Lychee has a shelf life of up to 35 days, which will help businesses export large quantities by sea, with shipping costs many times cheaper than by air.
